To work in the fashion world, you can either learn by yourself, which is a longer process, or you can go to school and get a college degree in fashion design. Working in this field is different for everybody. As so many things are taught in this program, a lot of jobs are awaiting. Whether you want to work as an actual fashion designer or a placement technician, there are words you need to know to be able to communicate with your colleagues and clients. Here are a few of them.
- armscye
- the armhole, the fabric's edge to which the sleeve is sewn
- clicker press
- a manual press that utilizes a cam mechanism to generate powerful force to cut fabric
- conglomerate
- a parent company that owns smaller bands who operate independently
- cover stitch
- a professional looking hem that looks like two rows of stitching on the top and a serger like stitch on the back
- diffusion line
- a line of products that is visually related to the main product of a company in some manner of design but is usually sold at a lower price point and under a different label to reach consumers with a lower purchasing power
- fad
- a short trend
- fashion forecaster
- predicts the colors, patterns, fabrics, textures, materials, prints, graphics, beauty grooming, accessories, footwear, street styles, and many other styles that will be presented on different runway shows and in stores in upcoming seasons
- fashion house
- a company specializing in the design and sale of high-fashion clothing and accessories
- flat drawing
- two-dimensional technical drawings that show how the final garment should look like
- garment
- an item of clothing
- knock-off
- a copy of a fashion design that is manufactured in cheaper materials and sold at a lower price than the original
- over stitch
- any of various stitches now usually made on a serger with one, two, or three threads to bind a raw edge on cloth or make an ornamental edge, finish, or hem
- patchwork
- a technique that consists of sewing small pieces of fabrics, textures, colors, and patterns all together to create larger geometric designs
- patronage
- the process of creating a pattern

- serger / overlocker
- a sewing machine used for overcasting to prevent material from fraying at the edge
- standardized sizing
- a system of creating mass-produced garments in regular measurement intervals
- tailor
- a person whose occupation is making fitted clothes such as suits, pants, and jackets to fit individual customers
- trimmings
- decorative pieces of fabric and ribbons added to the surface of a finished garment.

- a retailer who buys in large from different brands to sell in their stores
