I am a student at Ahuntsic College and I study Pre-Hospital Emergency Care and will finish class next year in 2026. This glossary will be useful to achieve a better understanding of some very technical words and to learn the exact definition of those words so I can remember them in the future.

alkalosis
noun
An excessively alkaline condition of the body fluids or tissues that may cause weakness or cramps.
Example: If inadequate ventilation were sustained, CO 2 levels would eventually rise, as would HCO 3 levels as a compensatory metabolic ALKALOSIS developed.

anemia
noun
Anemia is a problem of not having enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin to carry oxygen to the body's tissues.
Example: ANEMIA may also occur in cancer patients as a consequence of the disease or as an adverse effect from the chemotherapy treatment they receive.

angina
noun
A condition marked by severe pain in the chest, often also spreading to the shoulders, arms, and neck, caused by an inadequate blood supply to the heart.
Example: The pain was described by Mr as an "ANGINA-like" central crushing chest pain.

Bradycardia is a slow heart rate. often lower than 50 beats per minutes.

A flexible tube inserted through a narrow opening into a body cavity, particularly the bladder, for removing fluid.
Example: There was no Urinary CATHETER, sputum pot or nebuliser visible.

cephalalgia
noun
A continuous pain in the head.
Example: Cephalgia, more commonly known as a headache, includes any type of pain affecting the head, face, or neck.

Combi Carrier

combitube
noun
It is designed to provide an airway to facilitate the mechanical ventilation of a patient in respiratory distress.
Example: The Combitube is a disposable emergency airway management device consisting of two lumens and two inflation cuffs.

convulsion

A sudden, violent, irregular movement of a limb or of the body, caused by involuntary contraction of muscles and associated especially with brain disorders such as epilepsy, the presence of certain toxins or other agents in the blood, or fever in children.
Example: A seizure is a CONVULSION or transient abnormal event resulting from spontaneous, uncoordinated discharge of cerebral neurones.

cyanosis

Cyanosis is the medical term for when your skin, lips or nails turn blue due to a lack of oxygen in your blood.
Example: No pale palmar creases, No peripheral CYANOSIS.

diaphoresis
noun
Diaphoresis is the medical definition of excessive sweating due to an underlying health condition or a medication.
Example: The signs and symptoms of diaphoresis include excessive sweating without typical external triggers such as warm climate or exercise.

edema

Edema is swelling caused by too much fluid trapped in the body's tissues.
Example: This will expedite the removal of hemoarthrosis, reduce spasms, EDEMA and pain as well as reduce nerve root irritation when present.12 Phase of Healing -- Phases II and III The second stage of healing, the repair phase, may last from 48 hours up to 6 weeks.

Obstruction of an artery, typically by a clot of blood or an air bubble.
Example: Other possible diagnoses which should be excluded at this stage include: Pulmonary EMBOLISM - has no risk factors for the development of a PE (e.g. obesity, Oral contraceptive pill, post surgery, smoking etc) and did not report any haemoptysis or dizziness.

glucometer
noun
A device for measuring the concentration of glucose in the blood, typically using a small drop of blood placed on a disposable test strip, where a chemical reaction with glucose alters the electrical conductivity of the strip.
Example: A blood glucose meter is a small, portable machine that's used to measure how much glucose is in the blood.

hypoxia
noun
Hypoxia is low levels of oxygen in your body tissues.
Example: However, when it reaches the point of severe HYPOXIA, it induces metabolic depression, it shuts down its neuronal activity to the maximum, slows down its heart beat, breathing and relaxes arteries to make the pumping of blood to the brain much easier.

pulse oximetry
noun
Pulse oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the blood.
Example: The oxygen dose prescribed in severe acute asthma attacks should therefore be variable and based on achieving and maintaining an spO2 of 92% adults and 95% children using PULSE OXIMETRY [3] .

sphygmomanometer
noun
An instrument for measuring blood pressure, typically consisting of an inflatable rubber cuff which is applied to the arm and connected to a column of mercury next to a graduated scale, enabling the determination of systolic and diastolic blood pressure by increasing and gradually releasing the pressure in the cuff.
Example: The sphygmomanometer was used to calculate the patient blood pressure.

Syncope (pronounced “sin-ko-pea”) is the medical term for fainting or passing out.
Example: Likely diagnoses include: Cardiogenic SYNCOPE - due to a tachy or brady arrhythmia.

vacuum mattress

A vacuum mattress, or vacmat, is a medical device used for the immobilisation of patients, especially in case of a vertebra, pelvis or limb trauma.

vital signs

Vital signs are measurements of the body's most basic functions.
Example: Her VITAL SIGNS should be assessed, particularly her oxygen saturations and blood gases.
