Medicine is the science of maintaining the health care of a patient via prevention, diagnosis, treatment or cure of an illness or an injury. A term that can be uses is the science of healing. If you want to practice this science, you need to know approximately all the disease known to mankind. Plus, you need to understand all biologicals mechanisms that compose the human body. However, before mastering all this, you need to understanding the basic of the profession and science. This glossary is made for people who don't know about, the different system in the body, the type of problem that happen in the body and mostly the basic terms that will be used frequently in a hospital. This glossary can be useful with someone who wants to understand better his television series about medics or someone who has difficulties understanding what his doctor says to him at the hospital.
- bacteria
- A member of a large group of unicellular microorganisms which have cell walls but lack organelles and an organized nucleus, including some that can cause disease.
- cardiac system
- A system of organs that includes the heart, blood vessels, and blood which is circulated throughout the entire body of a human or other vertebrate.
- cells
- The smallest unit that can live on its own and that makes up all living organisms and the tissues of the body.
- degenerative disease
- A disease in which the function or structure of the affected tissues or organs changes for the worse over time.
- diagnosis
- The identification of the nature of an illness or other problem by examination of the symptoms.
- disorder
- An illness that disrupts normal physical or mental functions.
- immune system
- A complex network of cells, tissues, organs, and the substances they make that helps the body fight infections and other diseases.
- infection
- The invasion and growth of germs in the body.
- injury
- A physical harm or damage to someone's body caused by an accident or an attack.
- medical condition
- A term that refers to a person's state of health.
- medical error
- The failure to complete the intended plan of action or implementation of the wrong plan to achieve an intended outcome.
- nervous system
- An organized group of cells, called neurons, specialized for the conduction of an impulse, an excited state, from a sensory receptor through a nerve network to an effector, the site at which the response occurs.
- palliative care
- The active holistic care of patients with advanced progressive illness.
- patient
- A person receiving or registered to receive medical treatment.
- patient chart
- A private medical record that contains systematic documentation of an individual patient's important clinical data and medical history over time.
- prescription medicine
- A medicine that can only be made available to a patient on the written instruction of an authorized health professional.
- pulse
- A rhythmical throbbing of the arteries as blood is propelled through them, typically as felt in the wrists or neck.
- respiratory system
- The organs and structures in your body that allow you to breathe. It includes your lungs, nose, mouth and the tube like structures.
- tissue
- A group of cells that have similar structure and function together as a unit.
- virus
- An infective agent that typically consists of a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat, is too small to be seen by light microscopy, and is able to multiply only within the living cells of a host.
