Veterinary medicine is a medical specialty concerned with the prevention, control, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and injuries affecting the health of domestics and wild animal. My glossary can be used by first-years students of veterinary medicine school to become familiar with technical and semi-technical term that will be used in their class.
- allergies
- An allergy is a chronic condition involving an abnormal reaction to an ordinarily harmless substance called an allergen.
- animal anatomy
- The study of the structure of animals, including the internal structure of organs, muscles, bones, and other tissues.
- behavior
- The way in which an animal acts in response to a particular situation or stimulus.
- biochemistry analyzer
- An instrument that uses the pale yellow supernatant portion, serum, of centrifuged blood sample or a urine sample, and induces reactions using reagents to measure various components, such as sugar, cholesterol, protein, enzyme, etc.
- cloven-hoofed animals
- Animals who have two toes.
- diagnosis
- The identification of a disease from its signs and symptoms.
- ECG
- A test to record the electrical signals in the heart.
- FMD
- Is an infectious and sometimes fatal viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals, including domestic and wild bovines.
- infection
- The invasion and growth of germs in the body.
- milk fever
- Disease characterized by reduced blood calcium levels.
- nervous system
- An organized group of cells, called neurons, specialized for the conduction of an impulse an excited state from a sensory receptor through a nerve network to an effector, the site at which the response occurs.
- parasite
- An organism that lives in or on an organism of another species, its host and benefits by deriving nutrients at the other's expense.
- pathology
- The science of the causes and effects of diseases.
- stethoscope
- A medical instrument for detecting sounds produced in the body that are conveyed to the ears of the listener through rubber tubing connected with a piece placed upon the area to be examined.
- thermometer
- An instrument for measuring and indicating body temperature.
- treatment
- Medical care given to a patient for an illness or injury.
- ultrasound
- A procedure that uses high-energy sound waves to look at tissues and organs inside the body.
- vaccination
- Treatment with a vaccine to produce immunity to a particular infectious disease or pathogen.
- X-ray
- A photographic or digital image of the internal composition of something, especially a part of the body, produced by X-rays being passed through it and being absorbed to different degrees by different materials.
- zoonotic disease
- An infectious disease that has jumped from a non-human animal to humans.
