This field of study is used to build the world around us and to understand how certain structures that we see every day work. This program seeks to teach future engineers the principles necessary to know to be able to carry out construction projects that will improve our infrastructure while respecting nature and ensuring our safety. This glossary will help students to better understand the useful terms of this program and pronounced them correctly so as not to have a misunderstanding when speaking with another person.

acoustic
noun
The branch of physics concerned with the properties of sound.
Example: This regulation enforces sound protection for other parts of the building, protection of common internal parts of buildings and estimate of acoustic conditions in public spaces.

bending
verb
Shape or force (something straight) into a curve or angle.
Example: Similarly, the finishing, machining, bending, assembly, and packaging operations are much less energy intensive than the main production processes and will not be included in the assessment.

casting
verb
The making of an object by pouring molten metal or other material into a mold.
Example: The manufacturing methods that would possibly be employed in fabricating this system would include carpentry for the drum system, casting, forging, cutting, for the iron components and molding for the concrete rail.

center of gravity
noun
A point from which the weight of a body or system may be considered to act. In uniform gravity it is the same as the center of mass.
Example: Everything that has been built up in the last twenty years is crashing down with a deafening roar, its balance destroyed, its center of gravity out of kilter.

corrosion
noun
The process of corroding metal, stone, or other materials.
Example: Lastly, I have looked at how to join the wiring on the panto graph to limit corrosion and benefit maintenance.

decibel
noun
A unit used to measure the intensity of a sound or the power levels of an electrical signal by comparing it with a given level on a logarithmic scale.
Example: On the A-scan it is not necessary to measure the actual decibel drop.

degrees of freedom
noun
Each of a number of independently variable factors affecting the range of states in which a system may exist, in particular any of the directions in which independent motion can occur.
Example: Velocity and acceleration degrees of freedom are applied to appropriate nodes of the mesh representing the motion of the vehicle, and in addition any other constraint.

density
noun
The degree of compactness of a substance.
Example: The scroll volute has an increasing cross-sectional area that slows the fluid down converting kinetic head into static head, since following the continuity equation principle it can be seen that for a non-compressible fluid the density remains constant and the velocity of a fluid decreases with increasing area.

dynamics
noun
The branch of mechanics concerned with the motion of bodies under the action of forces.
Example: Various analytical methods including finite element analysis, mechanism dynamic simulation and computational fluid dynamics are being integrated into the design process to enable the most appropriate design to be chosen to solve the original design problem.

noun
A machine with moving parts that converts power into motion.
Example: That engine testing should be done more rigorously with more accurate models closer to true flying conditions.

hardness
The quality or condition of being hard.
Example: A reduction in grain size caused by increased cooling rate results in an increased strength and hardness.

heat transfer
noun
The movement of heat from one substance or material to another.
Example: The louvered designs provided a larger surface area and also increase the turbulence of the passing air, giving greatly improved heat transfer.

impedance
noun
The effective resistance of an electric circuit or component to alternating current, arising from the combined effects of ohmic resistance and reactance.
Example: On this basis, the following resistors can be chosen: However, the differential amplifier in figure 6 is limited, because it has relatively low input impedance, and there is a common mode gain produced by the inputs, which would also produce an output signal.

inertia
noun
A tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged.
Example: Camshafts were design to hollow so that the rotating inertia was reduced.

joule
noun
The international system unit of work or energy, equal to the work done by a force of one newton when its point of application moves one meter in the direction of action of the force, equivalent to one 3600th of a watt-hour.
Example: Is Paul Mobbs one joule short of a kWh?

lever
noun
A rigid bar resting on a pivot, used to help move a heavy or firmly fixed load with one end when pressure is applied to the other.
Example: Also, the layout of the dials was such that the critical vibration sensors for both engines appeared over the right lever for the No. 2 engine.

A system of parts working together in a machine; a piece of machinery.
Example: If there is a fire in the building the process of the fire controlling mechanism is able to operate without damaging the infrastructure and data: For example, in the event of a fire, the fire alarm communicates with the security system to unlock the doors.

The branch of physics or technology concerned with the mechanical properties of gases.
Example: Although pneumatic actuators have many applications, there are advantages and disadvantages of using pneumatic instead of electrical actuators.

pulley
noun
A wheel with a grooved rim around which a cord passes. It acts to change the direction of a force applied to the cord and is chiefly used (typically in combination) to raise heavy weights.
Example: Roman technology made extensive use of wheels and mechanical pulley systems.

noun
A force tending to pull or stretch something to an extreme or damaging degree.
Example: This is because load cells with their excellent stiffness minimize errors while measuring strain.
