Mining and geologies.
20 terms
This glossary was made for a test in a college class. I need to do it in my field of study. There will be 20 words in this glossary. So yeah, hires some words that we use in mining and geologies workplace.
- 100T
- Is a 100-ton haul truck, typically used in open pit mining.
- amd
- Acid mine drainage, acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD), is the outflow of acidic water from metal mines and coal mines.
- b soil
- This layer normally has less organic matter than the A horizon, so its colour is mainly derived from iron oxides. Iron oxides and clay minerals accumulate as a result of weathering. In soil, where substances move down from the topsoil, this is the layer where they accumulate. The process of accumulation of clay minerals, iron, aluminum, and organic compounds, is referred to as illuviation. The B horizon has generally a soil structure.
- blast
- Is the controlled use of explosives and other methods, such as gas pressure blasting pyrotechnics, to break rock for excavation.
- c soil
- Layer of non-indurated poorly weathered or unweathered rocks. This layer may accumulate more soluble compounds like CaCO3. Soils formed in situ from non-indurated material exhibit similarities to this C layer.
- cut off grade
- Is the minimum grade required in order for a mineral or metal to be economically mined (or processed). Material found to be above this grade is considered to be ore, while material below this grade is considered to be waste.
- field book
- Is a book in which a surveyor or other technician or scientist writes down measurements and other technical notes taken in the field.
- fracking
- Is the process of injecting liquid at high pressure into subterranean rocks, boreholes, etc. so as to force open existing fissures and extract oil or gas.
- gangue
- Is the commercially valueless material in which ore is found.
- high grade
- Is (of ore) rich in metal value and commercially profitable.
- knelson
- A Knelson concentrator is a type of gravity concentration apparatus, predominantly used in the gold mining industry. It is used for the recovery of fine particles of free gold, meaning gold that does not require gold cyanidation for recovery.
- norms
- Is something that is usual, typical, or standard.
- rack
- Is a framework, typically with rails, bars, hooks, or pegs, for holding or storing things.
- safety zone
- Is an area that is subject to restrictions in order to ensure the safety of people nearby.
- silicosis
- Is a lung fibrosis caused by the inhalation of dust containing silica.
- silt
- Is a fine sand, clay, or other material carried by running water and deposited as a sediment, especially in a channel or harbor.
- stoping
- Is (in mining) the excavation of a series of steps or layers in the ground or rock.
- topography
- Is the arrangement of the natural and artificial physical features of an area.
- total station (or leica)
- A total station or total station theodolite is an electronic/optical instrument used for surveying and building construction.
- xrf
- Is a X-ray fluorescence (XRF).
