20 Pre-hospital Emergency Care terms

This following glossary is for people in my field of study who don't know their medical terms in English or their definition and want to learn them.

airway
noun
The passage by which air reaches a person's lungs.
Example: When the paramedics arrived at the scene, she was able to maintain her own AIRWAY but had a GCS of 6.

anaphylaxis
noun
An acute allergic reaction to an antigen (e. G., a bee sting) to which the body has become hypersensitive.
Example: . ANAPHYLAXIS - There was no report of a direct precipitant to the attack of shortness of breath in the hours preceding the attack e.g. drugs, latex etc.

aneurism
noun
A localized dilatation of the wall of an artery leading to the formation of a pocket of variable size.
Example: The patient had a big aneurism and it led to big medical problems.

arrhythmia
noun
A condition in which the heart beats with an irregular or abnormal rhythm.
Example: Cardiogenic syncope due to a tachy or brady arrhythmia.

asystole
noun
A condition in which the heart no longer beats and usually cannot be restarted.
Example: The patient had an asytole and even with the paramedic help he died.

bag-valve masks
noun
An airway apparatus used to cover the patient's nose and mouth and begin ventilating the lungs mechanically by squeezing a reservoir of oxygen or air.
Example: The patient couldn't breathe on his own so we had to help him using a bag-valve mask

noun
A strip of material used to bind a wound or to protect an injured part of the body.
Example: These findings were supported by another study in which patients were treated with an elastic bandage and immediate weight bearing.

breathlessness
noun
Shortness of breath : a dyspneic condition.
Example: Pulmonary embolism is radiologically confirmed partial or total thromboembolic occlusion of pulmonary arteries sufficient to cause symptoms of BREATHLESSNESS, chest pain or both .

cephalalgia
noun
It is pain anywhere in the region of the head or neck.
Example: The patient called the paramedic because he had an enormous cephalalgia.

concussion
noun
Head trauma affecting mainly memory.
Example: The patient had a big car accident so he now suffer from a concussion.

hemorrhage
Noun
An escape of blood from a ruptured blood vessel, esp. when profuse.
Example: Pressure applied with a sterile pressure dressing will control HEMORRHAGE.

Hemorrhage of the left eye sustained from orbital trauma.
hypoxia
Noun
Deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues.
Example: This organism when exposed to HYPOXIA, first maintains its oxygen uptake by breathing more rapidly, achieved by a change in the gill perfusion pattern.

infarct
Noun
Cell death due to an inadequate intake of oxygen.
Example: If there is no nearby blood supply to compensate for this deficit, the affected area of brain will die and INFARCT.

pulse
Noun
A rhythmical throbbing of the arteries as blood is propelled through them, typically as felt in the wrist or neck.
Example: The patient pulses was very low so we started to worry.

resuscitation
Noun
The act of reviving a person and returning them to consciousness.
Example: Although he was apparently drowned, resuscitation was accomplished by artificial respiration.

salbutamol
Noun
A sympathomimetic agent used as a bronchodilator, especially in the treatment of asthma.
Example: He has a wheeze he attributes to asthma, which was diagnosed one year ago, for which he is prescribed Combivent and SALBUTAMOL.

Salbutamol nebulae for inhalation.
smock
Noun
A loose dress or blouse, with the upper part closely gathered in smocking.
Example: Prisoners had to wear a SMOCK with no underwear, rubber sandals, stockings on their heads and a heavy chain on their right foot.

splint
Noun
A splint is a device used for support or immobilization of limbs or of the spine.
Example: Advice and Prevention Wear supportive SPLINT and sling for 6-8 weeks postoperatively.

Arm splint
tourniquet
Noun
A device for stopping the flow of blood through a vein or artery, typically by compressing a limb with a cord or tight bandage.
Example: Pre prep in anaesthetic room, TOURNIQUET used to minimise blood loss during procedure - 300mmHg

Noun
A vein is a vessel that allows the transport of blood from the periphery to the heart.
Example: With infusion, needles can become dislodged and damage the VEIN.
