Hello, my name is Philippe Béland and I've been in this program since the end of 2023. My glossary will be useful for many people as my co-workers or the next generation of police officers and the current ones. It will be easy for them to have a better understanding of the words they are looking for in my glossary, because I will include images, definitions and more.
Accused
Noun
a person or people charged in a court of law with a crime
Example: The accused was found guilty.

Active shooter
Noun
An individual actively engaged in killing people in a confined and populated area.
Example: There is an active shooter in the school.

Autopsy
Noun
Dissection of a body to determine the cause of death.
Example: Not all autopsies are conducted in an effort to show that crimes have been committed.

Badge
Noun
A distinctive emblem won as a mark of office, membership, achievement, or liscensed employment
Example: As I start my new job as a police officer, they gave me my personal badge to put on my shirt.

Baton
Noun
A short, heavy stick, carried by a policeman as a weapon.
Example: The police officers are using theirs baton to try to break up de crowd.

bulletproof vest
Noun
A vest capable of resisting the impact of a bullet
Example: A policeman survived because he had a bulletproof vest when he was shot.

Canadian Criminal Code
Noun
A law that codifies most criminal offences and procedures in Canada.
Example: Lawyers often use the Canadian Criminal Code to justify their statement

Complaint
Noun
A statement that something is wrong or not satisfactory.
Example: The citizen made a complaint to the police station about his noisy neighbor.

Court
Noun
A place where trials and other legal cases happen, or the people present in such a place, especially the officials and those deciding if someone is guilty.
Example: After being placed under arrest, the suspect must appear in court on Friday night.

Crime scene
Noun
A place where a crime has been committed.
Example: He was told not to disturb the crime scene, or he could be put under arrest.

Someone who commits a crime.
Example: This prison is where the biggest criminals are found.

Detective
Noun
Someone whose job is to discover information about crimes and find out who is responsible for them.
Example: After he found a dead body in the forest, the police officer immediately called the detective, so he can investigate about the possible crime.

Gun
Noun
A weapon consisting of a metal tube, with mechanical attachments, from which projectiles are shot by the force of an explosive; a piece of ordonance.
Example: This man should not be approached as he may have a gun.

Handcuffs
Noun
Two metal or plastic rings joined by a short chain that lock around wrists.
Example: The police officer put handcuffs to the suspect and led him to the vehicle.

Judge
Noun
A person who is in charge of a trial in a court and decides how a person who is guilty of a crime should be punished, or who makes decisions on legal matters.
Example: The judge decided to take one more day, so he can make the best decision.

Pepper spray
Noun
A chemical based on a substance found in hot peppers, in a container that can be sprayed (= forced out in small drops) into a person's face. This causes pain and tears in the eyes and can be used by police or as a method of self-defence.
Example: Saturday, I saw a police officer use his pepper spray to keep the protesters away.

Police car
Noun
An official car used by the police.
Example: The suspect was put in the back of the police car and taken to the police station, so the detective can ask him questions about a crime.

Noun
The local/office of the police in a town or part of a city.
Example: She was called to the police station after her son was put under arrest the night before.

Taser
Noun
A brand name for a weapon that gives someone a small electric shock and makes them unable to move for a short time, sometimes used by police.
Example: To use a teaser on someone, a police officer needs to receive a certification.

Trial
Noun
The hearing of statements and showing of objects, etc. in a law court to judge if a person is guilty of a crime or to decide a case or a legal matter.
Example: It was a very complicated trial that went for months.
