Hello I’m a student at College Ahuntsic on my first session of radiation oncology. I made this glossary to help the people who were interested in this program and want to learn more about it. Basically the glossary will be me explaining about radiation oncology in multiple ways. I used google to help me fill out for this glossary and the definitions.
Adenoma
noun
A benign tumour formed from glandular structures in epithelial tissue.
Example: She underwent adrenalectomy and pathology reported an adenoma.

Alopecia
Noun
The partial or complete absence of hair from areas of the body where it normally grows.
Example: She started losing her hair due to alopecis when she was in primary school.

Antibiotic
Noun
A medicine (such as penicillin or its derivatives) that inhibits the growth of or destroys microorganisms.
Example: I'm taking antibiotics for a throat infection.

Antiemetic
noun
A medicine used to prevent or relieve nausea and vomiting.
Example: The doctor gave her an anti-emetic to stop the sickness.

Anuria
Noun
Failure of the kidneys to produce urine.
Example: On the day before death, the animal became apathetic, dehydrated and anuric.

Benign tumour

Benign tumors are those that stay in their primary location without invading other sites of the body.
Example: He was first diagnosed with a benign tumour nine years ago.

Biopsy
Noun
An examination of tissue removed from a living body to discover the presence, cause, or extent of a disease.
Example: The biopsy left a wound that needed to be bandaged.

Bone marrow
noun
Bone marrow is a spongy substance found in the center of the bones. It manufactures bone marrow stem cells and other substances, which in turn produce blood cells.
Example: The situation was that I needed to give my bone marrow.

An injury appearing as an area discoloured skin on body, caused by a blow or impact rupturing underlying blood vessels.
Example: Bruised her arm when he grabbed her.

Cancer
Noun
A disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a part of the body.
Example: He got cancer.

Carcinogenesis

The formation of a cancer whereby normal cells are transformed into cancer cells.
Example: The passage of time is a ubiquitous carcinogen to which we are all exposed but age itself is not the mechanism of carcinogenesis.

A cancer arising in the epithelial tissue of the skin or of the lining of the internal organs.
Example: Her battle with adrenal cortical carcinoma has lasted more than six years.

Chemotherapy

Cyst
noun
A thin-walled hollow organ or cavity containing a liquid secretion.
Example: Her word is chalazion, a cyst in the eyelid.

Diagnosis

The identification of the nature of an illness or other problem by examination of the symptoms.
Example: The unusual combination of symptoms made accurate diagnosis difficult.

Dosimetrist
noun
A person who plans and calculates the proper amount of radiation dose for each treatment
Example: Found myself checking the dosimeter for radiation levels more often than usual.

Dyspnea
noun
Difficult or labored breathing.
Example: Many soldiers presented with acute dyspnea.

Gamma ray
noun
Penetrating electromagnetic radiation of a kind arising from the radioactive decay of atomic nuclei.
Example: The gamma ray beam was fired directly into the ground along the entire route.

Genitourinary

Relating to the genital and urinary organs or functions.
Example: She is a consultant in genitourinary medicine.

Hemoptysis
noun
Coughing up of blood or bloody sputum from the lungs or airway.
Example: She developed fever, cough, hemoptysis, and cavitary lesion on chest skiagram.
