My name is Iman. I study in Social Science and my field of study is Business. I have been in this program for two years. This is my last semester. This glossary is here to help Business students like me have a better understanding of the key words people use on a daily basis at work.
This glossary will help improve your communication and help you navigate business discussions. There are 20 terms in this glossary. You will find the definitions, translations in French, prononciation, how it's used in a sentence and sometimes there will be images. To find those words and their definitions, I used my Actively Engaged Online book.
Now I want you to remember those words and try using them at work or with other students in this field of study.
A share
noun
A type of share in a unit trust or mutual fund (= investment service managed by financial experts) that carries a sales charge when it is bought rather than when it is sold.
Example: I sold half of my shares to my brother.

A register of financial transactions providing access to funds on demand, through a variety of different channels.
Example: This account is loaded with money.

noun
A person concerned with the maintenance and audit of business accounts and the preparation of consultant reports in tax and finance.
Example: My accountant is the one doing my corporate taxes.

Advertisement
noun
A promotional message to attract interest in a particular product, service or job vacancy.
Example: I hired a marketing team to do our company's advertisements.

Advisory board
noun
An advisory board is a group of people chosen to give expert and unbiased advice to a business.
Example: I had a meeting with the advisory boars.

A person who does business for another person.
Example: You'll have to go through his agent.

Amortization
noun
Amortization is an accounting method for spreading out the costs for the use of a long-term asset over the expected period the long-term asset will provide value.
Example: We can work out the estimated amortization expense for each of the next five years.

Assets
noun
Assets refer to everything a company owns, from cash to equipment to intellectual proprety. On a balance sheet, they are devided into current and long-term assets.
Example: My money is an asset.

The activity or occupation of keeping records of the financial affairs of a business.
Example: Dean spent the balance of the afternoon doing bookkeeping for the lodging establishment.

A category of products that are all made by a particular company and all have a particular name.
Example: The store sells a variety of shoe brands.

The amount of money the company has on hand to pay of its operating expenses.
Example: We were able to maintain a steady cash flow.

A person who buys goods and services.
Example: The economy remains sluggish and consumers are not spending.

noun
A formal agreement between two or more parties. A document that states the terms of such an agreement. the branch of law treating of contracts.
Example: I will read the contract before signing it.

The ability to obtain goods or services before payment, based on the trust that payment will be made in the future.
Example: My credit score is high.

A sum of money placed or kept in a bank account, usually to gain interest.
Example: I deposited 100$ in my bank account.

Adjective
Good faith deposit made by a buyer to underline his or her commitment to complete the deal.
Example: I made a 5% down payment to buy my house.
