Glossary of my future field.

20 Medical Electrophysiology glossary terms

Today I will cover all the glossaries of my future program. I will be starting this program next semester. I am happy to learn more about my field today, even though I still know some things about my field because I have been getting this test, since I was little.

Abnormal
adjectif
Outside the expected norm, or uncharacteristic of a particular patient.
Example: Genetic mutations resulting in ABNORMAL epithelial enable bacteria to adhere more efficiently to respiratory epithelium.
en: Féminin: Anormale Masculin: Anormal
Aneurysm
noun
A localized, pathological, blood-filled dilatation of a blood vessel caused by a disease or weakening of the vessel's wall.
Example: Although it is impossible to determine the precise cause of the emboli without further investigation, there was no evidence to suggest the presence of atrial fibrillation or an abdominal aortic ANEURYSM.
en: Anévrisme
Arrhythmia
noun
An abnormal heart rhythm.
Example: The vague awareness throughout the episodes and quick recovery would more likely point towards a cardiac ARRHYTHMIA cause.
en: Arythmie

Blood clot
noun
A gelatinous mass of fibrin and blood cells formed by the coagulation of blood.
Example: This obstruction is probably due to a BLOOD CLOT which has travelled down and blocked the arteries supplying your foot.
en: Caillot de sang
null
Brain
noun
An organ of soft nervous tissue contained in the skull of vertebrates, functioning as the coordinating center of sensation and intellectual and nervous activity.
Example: Cerebrally speaking, Steve Mithen finds it difficult to believe the early human BRAIN could be equivalent in size to, or in the case of Neanderthals in excess of, modern humans but produce a hominid incapable of speech (1996).

Cardiac arrest
Cardiac arrest, also known as sudden cardiac arrest, is when the heart stops beating suddenly.
Example: Where a patient can instruct the hospital staff to refrain from resuscitating her if she suffers CARDIAC ARREST.
en: Arrêt cardiaque

Cardiology
noun
The branch of medicine that deals with diseases and abnormalities of the heart.
Example: He was subsequently transferred to a CARDIOLOGY ward.
en: Cardiologie
Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) (Stroke).
noun
In medicine, a loss of blood flow to part of the brain, which damages brain tissue. Cerebrovascular accidents are caused by blood clots and broken blood vessels in the brain.
Example: Brain damage can be due to various problems such as CEREBROVASCULAR ACCIDENT, brain trauma or encephalitis infections.
en: Accident vasculaire cérébral (AVC).
null
Chest
noun
The front surface of a person's or animal's body between the neck and the abdomen.
Example: In mild cases, the child improves; however, in some cases the condition progresses with increasing breathlessness, wheeze, cyanosis and pyrexia. on examination the child has rapid, laboured breathing, tachycardia, gross lung hyperinflation producing a barrel-shaped CHEST, prominent neck veins and downward displacement of the liver.
en: Poitrine

Concussion
noun
Temporary unconsciousness or confusion caused by a blow on the head.
Example: A friend of mine got a severe concussion to the head.
en: Commotion cérébrale
null
Convulsion
noun
A sudden, violent, irregular movement of a limb or of the body, caused by involuntary contraction of muscles and associated especially with brain disorders such as epilepsy, the presence of certain toxins or other agents in the blood, or fever in children.
Example: A seizure is a CONVULSION or transient abnormal event resulting from spontaneous, uncoordinated discharge of cerebral neurones.
en: Convulsion
Electricity
noun
A form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles (such as electrons or protons), either statically as an accumulation of charge or dynamically as a current.
Example: Relaxed the land constraint in a more fundamental way than any other innovation before turn-of-the-century chemicals and ELECTRICITY.
en: Électricité
It is not the right picture for electricity. But you get the point that it comes from there.
Electrocardiogramme
noun
A recording of the electrical activity of the heart.
Example: My first tested at the hospital today is an electrocardiogram.
en: Électrocardiogramme
null
Electrode
noun
A conductor through which electricity enters or leaves an object, substance, or region.
Example: The frequency of the supply voltage is set at an appropriate value to correspond (or resonate) with the time it takes a particle to travel through one ELECTRODE.
en: Électrode
null
Electroencephalography
noun
The measurement of electrical activity in different parts of the brain and the recording of such activity as a visual trace (on paper or on an oscilloscope screen).
Example: Sleep-ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY and the secretion of cortisol and growth hormone in normal controls, Acta Endocrinologica (Copenhagen) 116 pp. 36 - 42.
en: Électroencéphalographie
null
Electromyography
noun
Electromyography (EMG) measures muscle response or electrical activity in response to a nerve's stimulation of the muscle.
Example: Investigations ELECTROMYOGRAPHY- Reported "Pure motor low amplitude anomalies.
en: Électromyographie
null
Electronystagmography
noun
A study of the recorded changes in corneoretinal potential caused by movements of the eye, used to assess nystagmus.
Example: Today I did a tested with an electronystagmography to see if I had nystagmus in my eyes.
en: Électronystagmographie
null
Electrophysiology
noun
The branch of physiology that deals with the electrical phenomena associated with nervous and other bodily activity.
Example: The scientists were able to demonstrate capacitive control of the electrophysiology of isolated hearts, retinal tissues and sciatic nerves of rats, as well as bioelectronic cardiac sensing.
en: Électrophysiologie
null
Epilepsy
noun
Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain characterized by repeated seizures. A seizure is usually defined as a sudden alteration of behavior due to a temporary change in the electrical functioning of the brain.
Example: Additional loss of inhibitory synaptic contact between neurones causes the spike and wave EEG activity characteristic of EPILEPSY.
en: Épilepsie
Heart beat
noun
The pulsation of the heart.
Example: Your body has the ability to override the mechanism which controls energy intake when food supply is unpredictable or reduced suddenly and your basal metabolic rate ( the energy needed to maintain basic body functions such as breathing and HEART BEAT, body heat ) is lowered to correspond with this decrease in food intake.
en: Battement de coeur.
