23 Medical sonography terms

My name is Anne-Daura Michaud and I'm a student from Ahuntsic College. I've been studying in the medical sonography since August 2022. When I finish the program, I'm going to have to pass the board exam, and after I will probably try to work outside of Quebec, maybe in Ontario or The United States. I create this glossary for people who are interested in the sonography field.

Anechoic
it's an adjective
Structures appear black, meaning no internal echoes. Examples include cysts, vessels, gallbladder ascites and water.
Example: There's an anechoic structure on the screen .

Aorta
it's a noun.
The aorta is a large, cane-shaped vessel that delivers oxygen-rich blood to your body.
Example: The aorta is one of the largest vessels in the human body.

It's an noun
blood vessel. especially : any of the tubular branching vessels that carry blood from the capillaries toward the heart.
Example: The hepatic artery is connected to the liver.

benign
it's an adjective
Benign refers to a condition, tumor, or growth that is not cancerous. This means that it does not spread to other parts of the body. It does not invade nearby tissue.
Example: A Hemangiomas is a benign tumor.

It's a noun.
a cancer arising in the epithelial tissue of the skin or of the lining of the internal organs.
Example: This patient was diagnosed with carcinoma.

cyst
It's a noun.
a tough protective capsule enclosing the larva of a parasitic worm or the resting stage of an organism.
Example: I just find a cyst in the left ovary.

it's a noun.
Echocardiography is a test using sound waves to produce live images of your heart.
Example: I have an echocardiography test to pass tomorrow.

ectopic pregnancy
it's a noun with an adjective.
An ectopic pregnancy is when a fertilised egg implants itself outside of the womb, usually in one of the fallopian tubes.
Example: She has an ectopic pregrancy .

Embolism
it's an noun.
A block in an artery caused by blood clots or other substances, such as fat globules, infected tissue, or cancer cells.
Example: Last year , this patient had a pulmonary embolism .

Hemodynamics
it's an adjective and a noun.
Hemodynamics refers to the relationship between the. motion of blood and the forces affecting this motion.
Example: You could have a hemodynamic instability.

hepatology
Hepatology is the branch of medicine that incorporates the study of liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, and pancreas as well as management of their disorders.
Example: Doctors need to pass their hepatology class.

Hyperechoic
it's an adjective
This term means "lots of echoes." These areas bounce back many sound waves. They appear as light gray on the ultrasound.
Example: The diaphgram appear hyperechoic when you scan it.

it's an noun
“imaging artifact” refers to any feature in an ultrasound image that doesn't accurately represent the examined area.
Example: There is so many types of imaging artefacts.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound

An imaging procedure that allows doctors to see muscles, joints, and more.
Example: A musculoskeletal ultrasound is a specialized exam that looks specifically at your muscles and joints.

obstetric sonography
it's a noun.
uses sound waves to produce pictures of a baby (embryo or fetus) within a pregnant woman, as well as the mother's uterus and ovaries.
Example: I should specialise myself in obstetric sonography.

a person specializing in the use of ultrasound for diagnostic medical imaging : a health-care professional trained and typically certified or licensed to use imaging equipment that transmits high-frequency sound waves to produce images or videos of internal body organs or tissues for visual examination and measurement or for diagnostic purposes
Example: You should ask the sonographer how long the exam is going to take.

A large ductless gland in the neck which secretes hormones regulating growth and development through the rate of metabolism.

Example: I have a vascular test tomorrow.

it's a noun.
