Hi, my name is Heijar. I'm currently a student at Montmorency College. I'm studying Social Sciences, so I can become a psychologist. This glossary is a great alternative for students like me that do a lot of things at the same time. This glossary will be a time saver and will have only a few important words for future psychologists.
Active listening
A feature of client-centered therapy that involves empathetic listening, by which the therapist echoes, restates, and clarifies what the client says.
Example: I need to be an active-listener when I work.

Antisocial personality disorder
A disorder characterized by a lack of conscience and lack of respect for other people’s rights, feelings, and needs.
Example: She has an antisocial personality disorder. That's why she likes to eat alone.

Approach-approach conflict
A conflict between two desirable alternatives.

Emotional intelligence
An ability that helps people perceive, express, understand, and regulate emotions.
Example: Some men have a lack of emotional intelligence. They don't express their feelings enough.

Gender
A learned distinction between masculinity and femininity.
Example: Khate is a transgender.

Nervous system
A complex, highly coordinated network of tissues that communicate via electrochemical signals.
Example: We move because the nervous system sends neurons to our members.

Nervous system cells that communicate via electrochemical signals.
Example: The brain has millions of neurons.

OEDIPUS COMPLEX
Oedipus complex, in psychoanalytic theory, a desire for sexual involvement with the parent of the opposite sex and a concomitant sense of rivalry with the parent of the same sex
Example: Kids have the oedipus complex around the age of 3-4. They're in love with their parent.

Panic attack
A period in which a person has uncomfortable and frightening physical and psychological symptoms, including heart palpitations, trembling, fear of dying, and a perceived loss of control.
Example: Sarah is so stressed because of her exam that she's having a panic attack.

Panic disorder
A disorder characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks.
Example: Sarah was diagnosed with a panic disorder.

Personality
The collection of characteristic thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make up a person.
Example: You have so much personality!

Personality disorders
Disorders characterized by stable patterns of experience and behavior that differ noticeably from patterns considered normal by a person’s culture.
Example: Sheldrick invents a lot of stories. That's because of his personality disorder.

Psychological dependence
Addiction based on cravings for a drug.
Example: Patrick has a psychological dependance because of his drugs uses.

Schizophrenia
A disorder involving a loss of contact with reality and symptoms that may include some of the following: hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech or behavior, emotional flatness, social withdrawal, decreased richness of speech, and lack of motivation.
Example: Sam hear voices that no one else can hear. He is schizophreniac.

Sexual Orientation
The direction of their emotional and erotic attraction toward members of the opposite sex, the same sex, or both sexes.
Example: Being a heterosexual is a sexual orientation.

Short-term memory
A memory system that stores a limited amount of information for a brief period.
Example: I don't remember what I ate yesterday because it's not important. This information was stock in my short-term memory.

Social norms
Societal rules about appropriate behavior.
Example: walking right in the metro is a social norm

Stereotypes
Beliefs about people based on their membership in a particular group.
Example: The BlackLiveMatter movement is to counter stereotypes.

Stress
The experience of being threatened by taxing circumstances. It also sometimes refers to circumstances that threaten well-being, to the response people have to threatening circumstances, or to the process of evaluating and coping with threatening circumstances
Example: Stress is caused by lack of sleep, lack of time, too much homework.
