6 Science terms

I study in science and, here in the Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe, the science programme is in French. Since we are becoming workers, I think it is important to be able to speak in English and to know the terms in English which is the international language.

Atom

The basic unit of a chemical element
Example: Everything on earth is made out of atoms. They are so small that we can't see all of them.

Beaker
noun
a lipped cylindrical glass container for laboratory use
Example: Can you put some water into the beaker.

Gravity
noun
The force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass.
Example: It is because of the force of gravity that we fall on the ground and that everything is attracted to the ground.

Periodic table of elements
noun
The periodic table is a tabular array of the chemical elements organized by atomic number, from the element with the lowest atomic number, hydrogen, to the element with the highest atomic number, oganesson.
Example: What is the number relate to oxygen in the periodic table of element?

Surgical needle holder
noun
A needle holder, also called needle driver or needle forceps, is a surgical instrument similar to a hemostat, used by doctors and surgeons to hold and push a suturing needle when performing wound closure, ligation and other surgical procedures that require re-anastomosis.
Example: The surgeon needed the surgical needle holder to start his work.

Syringe
noun
A tube with a nozzle and piston or bulb for sucking in and ejecting liquid in a thin stream, used for cleaning wounds or body cavities, or fitted with a hollow needle for injecting or withdrawing fluids.
Example: Can you pass me the syringe, I would like to inject the product to our patient?
