This glossary contains words a dentist may often use and must know if he wants to increase his patients dental health.
bleaching

Bleaching refers to teeth whitening. There are various teeth whitening options to help eliminates external stains from tea, coffee, wine, tobacco and other foods and drinks. Some teeth bleaching or whitening procedures include the use of whitening toothpaste or in-office or at-home bleaching. Bleaching agents like carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide are used most in the bleaching process.
Example: My teeth are not white enough, I want a BLEACHING.

Pointy teeth found next to your top and bottom incisors. As you have one on either side of both sets of incisors, you will usually have four canine teeth.
Example: The vampire has four big CANINES.

cavities

Cavities are permanently damaged areas in the hard surface of your teeth that develop into tiny openings or holes. Cavities, also called tooth decay or caries, are caused by a combination of factors, including bacteria in your mouth, frequent snacking, sipping sugary drinks and not cleaning your teeth well.
Example: You don't brush your teeth every day, so now you have a lot of CAVITIES on them.

Primarily, a dental bib is employed to protect a patient's garments from liquid and/or solid debris generated during a dental procedure. Further, a dental bib may be used to wipe a patient's face and mouth during or at the completion of surgery.
Example: There is some saliva on your DENTAL BIB.

dental drill

Dental drill: is a small, high-speed drill used during dental procedures, usually to remove decay and shape tooth structure prior to the insertion of a filling or crown.
Example: You have decay on your tooth, I am going to use my DENTAL DRILL to remove it.

A soft thread of floss silk or similar material used to clean between the teeth.
Example: I use DENTAL FLOSS every day.

dental scaler

Dental scalers are often used to remove hardened plaque that builds between your teeth and gums. While most dentists often use this tool during teeth cleaning procedures, they also use it to clear up the plaque forming in your gums to properly check your gum health.
Example: There is a lot of plaque on your tooth, I am going to use my DENTAL SCALER to remove it.

The tissue of the upper and lower jaws that surrounds the base of the teeth. Also, called gingiva.
Example: You have a GUM inflammation, that is why you feel pain in your mouth.

A medical face mask (also known as a surgical or procedure mask) is a medical device covering the mouth, nose and chin ensuring a barrier that limits the transition of an infective agent between the hospital staff and the patient.

Molars are the flat teeth at the rear of the mouth. Each molar typically has four or five cusps. They are used exclusively for crushing and grinding.
Example: The MOLARS are the most accurate teeth to crush something.

A device that fits into the mouth over one or both arches of teeth, which is usually made of plastic. They may be used to protect against injury during sport or fighting, or may serve a medical purpose.

Mouth mirrors are also called dental mirrors. They are used to examining, the oral cavity and the patient's teeth. Mouth mirrors consist of a handle and a mirror that can usually be removed.

Example: You often use your tongue and your PALATE to crush your food.

Radiography is another term for an x-ray. Dental x-rays are an essential part of dental care. They, along with an oral exam, help your dentist obtain a more thorough view of what’s occurring in your mouth. They allow an inside view of your teeth and bones — the hard tissues — as well as the soft tissues surrounding your jawbones and teeth.
Example: To examine your dental health, I am going to do a RADIOGRAPHY.

A narrow tubular device providing suction to draw saliva, blood, and debris from the mouth of a dental patient in order to maintain a clear operative field.

A knife with a small, sharp, sometimes detachable blade, as used by a dentist or a surgeon.
Example: To make a little hole in your palate, I am going to use my SCALPEL.

Example: My teeth are dirty, I have to brush them with my TOOTHBRUSH.

A thick, creamy substance that you put on a toothbrush to clean your teeth.
Example: If you want a good breath, you must use TOOTHPASTE when you are brushing your teeth.

Veneers are typically a cosmetic procedure to help patients correct smile imperfections. A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain that we sculpt to replace the smile surface of the tooth. If you have a discolored tooth, damaged tooth, or other imperfection you’d like to smooth out. Veneers can correct many issues. Some patients get full veneers, this is where the entire smile is rejuvenated. The procedure requires etching the natural tooth down a bit, so once you have veneers you need them for life.
