As a nurse, everything turns around evaluations. They evaluate the patients needs, their global health, the way they feel, the results of their treatments, and a lot more. Based on the results they obtain, they need to build or adapt the treatment plan and make sure the concerned professionals know about what the patients need and why. They are also in charge of filling numerous grids and report making sure that everything is well-documented for an effective monitoring. This glossary includes a lot of terms that nurses uses on a daily basis at work.

A strip of material used to bind a wound or to protect an injured part of the body.
Example: I will change your bandage.

Example: You need to hold on to your bed rails to help you sit down.

Shortness of breath — known medically as dyspnea — is often described as an intense tightening in the chest, air hunger, difficulty breathing, breathlessness or a feeling of suffocation.
Example: This patient presents breathlessness because of his pneumonia.

Edema is swelling caused by too much fluid trapped in the body's tissues.
Example: You have edema in your legs.

The stopping of a flow of blood.
Example: A lot of disorders can affect hemostasis.

A feeling of sickness with an inclination to vomit.

sphygmomanometer

An instrument for measuring blood pressure, typically consisting of an inflatable rubber cuff which is applied to the arm and connected to a column of mercury next to a graduated scale, enabling the determination of systolic and diastolic blood pressure by increasing and gradually releasing the pressure in the cuff.

A mixture of saliva and mucus coughed up from the respiratory tract, typically as a result of infection or other disease and often examined microscopically to aid medical diagnosis.
