Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)

The different ways people can resolve disputes without a trial.
Example: Arbitration centres provide alternative dispute resolution options for commercial and other disputes.

Assessor

A person or company that calculates the cost of loss or damage for your insurance.
Example: An assessor sent on behalf of the insurance company examined the damage on December 15.

Bear/Bull market
noun
Bear market : a time when the price of shares is falling and a lot of people are selling them.
Bull market : a time when the prices of most shares are rising.
Example: Bear market : Bankers had their bonuses slashed during the recent bear market.
Bull market : When the market is down, you lay off the traders hired during the bull market.

Example: They had only stemmed the first onslaught of the black tide.

Bond
noun
A bond is a fixed-income instrument that represents a loan made by an investor to a borrower.
Example: She has invested most of her money in stocks and bonds.

Environmentalist
noun
A person who studies the environment and who tries to protect it from being damaged by human activities.
Example: Some environmentalists argue for a return to a pre-industrial society.

Head-hunting firm

A company that provides employment recruiting services on behalf of the employer.
Example: The bank hired a headhunting firm before the financial crisis to build an equities team, but was forced to shelve the plans.

Hedge fund

An investment fund that trades large amounts of shares, currencies, etc. to take advantage of both rising and falling prices.
Example: The Senate Judiciary Committee met yesterday to discuss the growing problem of hedge funds accused of wrongdoing in the market place.

Merger and acquisition

A process of consolidation of companies or their major business assets through financial transactions between companies.
Example: Mergers and acquisitions formed part of the group's strategy.

Misrepresentation of fact
noun
A false statement of substantive fact, or conduct that leads to a belief of a substantive fact of material to proper understanding of the matter in hand, made with intent to deceive or mislead.
Example: Fraud exists if blatant misrepresentation of facts by the client [...] leads to the issuance of income support to which the client was not entitled.

Opening price

The opening price is the price at which a security first trades when an exchange opens for the day.
Example: The expected opening price was $28 a share.

Organic Farming

Agricultural system that uses ecologically based pest controls and biological fertilizers derived largely from animal and plants wastes and nitrogen-fixing cover crops.
Example: Seeds are the defining aspect of organic farming.

Someone who kills or takes wild animals illegally.
Example: The rangers' main job is to deter poachers.

Shelf life
noun
The length of time that a product, especially food, can be kept in a shop before it becomes too old to be sold or used.
Example: Fresh fruits have very short shelf lives.

Stop-loss
noun
an instruction to a broker to sell shares if they go down to a particular price
Example: With each share you pick, you should also set a stop-loss.

Subpoena
noun
A writ ordering a person to attend a court.
Example: He received a subpoena to appear as a witness for the prosecution.

Subsidiary
noun
A company that is owned by a larger company.
Example: California First Bank is a 77%-owned subsidiary of Bank of Tokyo.

To outsource
verb
To get work done by making a contract with another company to do it, often in another country, rather than in your own company.
Example: The candidate talks about working class issues, particularly about jobs being outsourced overseas.

To reserve a judgment
verb
The act of delaying the decision of a trial.
Example: The judge decided to reserve the judgment because of the troubles caused by the Parties.

Vacancy
noun
A job that no none is doing and is therefore available for someone new to do.
Example: There is a vacancy for a shop assistant on Saturdays.
