A long accompanied song for a solo voice, typically one in an opera or oratorio.

noun
An adult male singing voice between tenor and bass.
Example: He sang in a rich BARITONE.

Cadence
noun
A sequence of notes or chords comprising the close of a musical phrase.
Example: Only in the final bar is there another CADENCE on to an E minor chord.

Cantata
noun
A medium-length narrative piece of music for voices with instrumental accompaniment, typically with solos, chorus, and orchestra.
Example: The basic materials derive from a harmonic sequence (with melodic elaboration) taken from a CANTATA by J.S. Bach.

Chorus
noun
A large organized group of singers, especially one which performs with an orchestra or opera company.
Example: Lionel Sawkins has shown that men did, indeed, sing soprano parts at the French court, and Lois Rosow has pointed out the appearance of male sopranos in the CHORUS at the Paris Opera.

Clef
noun
Any of several symbols placed at the left hand end of a stave, indicating the pitch of the notes written on it.
Example: The song is written in bass CLEF.

Conductor

A person who directs the performance of an orchestra or choir.

Contralto
noun
The lowest female singing voice.
Example: Some famous CONTRALTO singers include Cher, Toni Braxton, Sade, and Annie Lennox.

Diaphragm
noun
A dome-shaped muscular partition separating the thorax from the abdomen in mammals. It plays a major role in breathing, as its contraction increases the volume of the thorax and so inflates the lungs.
Example: The DIAPHRAGM is very necessary when singing.

noun
A stylistic representation of a creative work or dramatic role.
Example: Her unique interpretation of the Liszt études.

Melody
noun
A sequence of single notes that is musically satisfying; a tune.
Example: He picked out an intricate MELODY on his guitar.

Operetta
noun
musical-dramatic production similar in structure to a light opera but characteristically having a romantically sentimental plot interspersed with songs, orchestral music, and rather elaborate dancing scenes, along with spoken dialogue.
Example: Today they are playing an OPERETTA in the theater.

noun
The arrangement of a piece of music in parts so that it can be played by an orchestra.
Example: ORCHESTRATION is very important for an orchestra.

Pentatonic
adjective
Relating to, based on, or denoting a scale of five notes, especially one without semitones equivalent to an ordinary major scale with the fourth and seventh omitted.
Example: Blues is defined, without qualification as based on a PENTATONIC, inflectional musical language, hence as antithetical to the functional - tonal language of bourgeois tradition.

Scale
noun
Any graduated sequence of notes, tones, or intervals dividing what is called an octave.
Example: The composition is written in the SCALE of C major.

Soprano
noun
The highest female singing voice.
Example: Only the SOPRANO sings this.

Tenor
noun
A singing voice between baritone and alto or countertenor, the highest of the ordinary adult male range.
Example: The soprano in B flat and the bass in E flat are to be found in very large wind orchestras, but the normal constitution of the saxophone section is two altos, a TENOR, and a baritone.

Coincidence in pitch of sounds or notes.
