This glossary contains a list of vocabulary from my English classes.
Air conditioning
noun
A system for controlling the humidity, ventilation, and temperature in a building or vehicle, typically to maintain a cool atmosphere in warm conditions.
Example: However, in recent years the number of Legionnaires' outbreaks has increased, the majority occurring during the summer months when use of AIR CONDITIONING is generally greater.

noun
An inflatable mattress.
Example: Sleep on an air mattress.

autocratic
adjective
Taking no account of other people's wishes or opinions; domineering.
Example: No doubt, the regime is unwaveringly AUTOCRATIC and loathsome, but its governance methods do not bear direct responsibility for its choice of security strategy or foreign policy.

Baby boomer
noun
A member of the demographically large generation born between the end of WWII and the mid-1960s. Because of their high numbers and the relative prosperity of the U.S. economy during their careers, the baby boomers are an economically influential generation.

A large outdoor board for displaying advertisements; a hoarding.
Example: Real SAC imagery is always at work, such as the BILLBOARD sign at the base entrance, 'the nation and your security are at stake', and the Command's motto, 'Peace is our Profession'.

Careful to avoid potential problems or dangers.
Example: This fits with the fact that we are often over CAUTIOUS about activity after a drink.

Guilty of or involving deceit; deceiving or misleading others.
Example: One can be DECEITFUL and hide their true self.

Worthy of being treated in a particular way, typically of being given assistance.
Example: Therefore, when the already stigmatised Africans arrived there, they were 'treated as somehow DESERVING a life and status different from English and other European settlers.".

noun
A person whose job is to receive messages and organize the movement of people or vehicles, especially in the emergency services.
Example: He told the dispatcher that his wife wasn't breathing.

Strongly wanting to do or have something.
Example: MOB are characterized as docile, subservient and EAGER to assume the role of the traditional "housewife".

An outburst of anger, or a display of great skill or energy.
Example: Baudelaire's modern painter captures this 'fleeting beauty', and it is with equal artistic skill that Simmel paints his picture of modernity, choosing "to illuminate with a FIREWORK rather than study with a lamp" (Schmoller:1981:vii).

Sparing or economical as regards money or food.
Example: Fast, FRUGAL, and rational: how rational norms explain behaviour.

lease
Verb, noun
A contract by which one party conveys land, property, services, etc. to another for a specified time, usually in return for a periodic payment. OR, grant (property) on lease; let.
Example: Theatrical Properties Ltd. , the court held that the contractual agreement which gave Clore "exclusive use of all the refreshment rooms of a theatre" was merely a licence rather than a LEASE.

pyramid scheme
noun
A form of investment (illegal in the UK and elsewhere) in which each paying participant recruits two further participants, with returns being given to early participants using money contributed by later ones.
Example: In a pyramid scheme, an organization compels individuals who wish to join to make a payment. In exchange, the organization promises its new members a share of the money taken from every additional member that they recruit.

A dishonest scheme; a fraud.
Example: SCAM Companies: Very often we hear the news these days of people posing as credit card company employees taking details of credit card transactions from customers over the phone.

Denoting or relating to credit or loan arrangements for borrowers with a poor credit history, typically having unfavourable conditions such as high interest rates.
Example: The sub-prime mortgage market.

Too long, slow, or dull; tiresome or monotonous.
Example: I will present the model given in their paper in American Economic Review, but due to space limitations I will omit some of the most TEDIOUS algebra and most logical statements.

A wild plant growing where it is not wanted and in competition with cultivated plants.
Example: Pest, WEED and disease management should adopt Integrated Pest or and WEED Management which have been successful in Southeast Asia.

wheelchair
noun
A chair fitted with wheels for use as a means of transport by a person who is unable to walk as a result of illness, injury, or disability.
Example: Patient was WHEELCHAIR bound due to the pain he was getting from his knees due to osteoarthritis.

Found or distributed over a large area or number of people.
Example: Almost all of the remaining woodland was cleared and WIDESPREAD 'Celtic' field systems and lynchetts were heavily ploughed over time.
