This glossary is directed at the audience of my presentation dedicated to archery.
Barebow
noun
A type of bow used strictly without additional aids such as an aiming aid or a stabilizer.
Example: What a pity, the whole team was disqualified because of stabilizers on their bows.

Bowyer
noun
A person who crafts, manufactures bows.
Example: This bowyer could reportedly make an English longbow in as little as two hours.

Bracer
noun
A guard or band worn over the wrist of the bow hand to protect it from the snap of the bowstring.
Example: Without a bracer, your arms would be covered in bruises.

Bullseye
noun
The center of a target commonly used in sports as archery or darts.
Example: She has scored a bullseye five times in a row, that is incredible!

Cam
noun
A projection on a rotating part in machinery, designed to make sliding contact with another part while rotating and to impart reciprocal or variable motion to it.
Example: With a cam, the drawstroke can be directly manipulated such that the bow's draw weight rises to peak weight sooner in the cycle.

Chest-guard
noun
A piece of fabric, padding, or armor to protect the chest, as in some sports.
Example: Upon release, the string could, in some cases, severely hit the athlete´s chest and cause an injury.

Federation
noun
A supporting political, societal or sports entity formed by uniting smaller or more localized entities into a larger entity.
Example: The organization emerged from a federation of six national agencies.

Fiberglass
noun
A reinforced plastic material composed of glass fibers embedded in a resin matrix.
Example: The aircraft is built from wood and fiberglass, with aircraft fabric covering.

Finger tab
noun
In archery, a finger tab or archer tab is a small leather or synthetic patch that protects an archer's fingers from the bowstring.
Example: Finger tabs are a necessity when handling a bow.

Magnifying glass
noun
A lens, through which the observer is capable of examining and identifying small or finely detailed objects, usually set in a frame or handle.
Example: A magnifying glass had to be used to identify the fingerprint.

Permitted
verb
To authorize or allow something.
Example: Smoking in a hospital is not permitted.

Quiver
noun
A sort of container for safe storing and holding arrows, darts and projectiles.
Example: Their new quiver is made of leather, a gentle material for protecting the arrows.

Riser
noun
A handle of the bow.
Example: The riser should be made of good quality materials.

Shoot off
noun
If a tie results after five sets, the archers go to a one-arrow shoot off. The archer with an arrow nearest to the target center wins the match.
Example: Both archers had to go through a nerve wracking shoot off.

Silencer
noun
A device used to reduce the sound of a gun as it is fired.
Example: The bow would make a much louder noise without a silencer.

Stabilizer
noun
Weighted rods mounted onto a bow with intent to balance it.
Example: This particular archer had difficulties maintaining the bow´s balance without any stabilizer.

Stringer
noun
A device to assist stringing the bow safely.
Example: I tried to string my bow without a stringer, it was very difficult.

Upgrade
verb
Improve something by removing, adding or replacing components.
Example: The company has significantly upgraded their customer service.

Upshot
noun
Final outcome or conclusion of a game, discussion, series of events, etc.
Example: The last arrow launched in an archery competition was called the upshot.

Vane
noun
Plastic, feather-like attachments on the upper part of an arrow, creating stability and accuracy in flight.
Example: The archer´s arrow would have been on the ground much sooner without an arrow vane.
