This glossary consists of words which were included in my presentation for ESP class. The topic of the presentation is Influences of music on mental health.
Alpha waves

Neural oscillations in the frequency range of 8–12 Hz likely originating from the synchronous and coherent electrical activity of thalamic pacemaker cells in human
Example: Alpha waves induce feelings of calm, increase creativity, and enhance your ability to absorb new information.

Alter
verb
To change something, usually slightly, or to cause the characteristics of something to change
Example: We've had to alter some of our plans.

Antidepressant
noun
A type of medicine used to treat clinical depression
Example: You may be prescribed an antidepressant which could help you to help yourself by giving you some power to make changes in your life.

Anxiety
noun
An uncomfortable feeling of nervousness or worry about something that is happening or might happen in the future
Example: Children normally feel a lot of anxiety about their first day at school.

Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
noun
The part of the nervous system that controls automatic processes such as breathing, digestion, and the beating of the heart
Example: Negative emotionality and cortisol during an adolescent pregnancy and its effects on infant health and autonomic nervous system reactivity.

Binaural beat
noun
A perception of sound created by your brain; if you listen to two tones, each at a different frequency and each in a different ear, your brain creates an additional tone - binaural beat
Example: Binaural beats therapy is a self-help method that people can use to treat conditions such as anxiety.

Blood pressure
noun
A measure of the pressure at which the blood flows through the body
Example: I take medicine for my high blood pressure.

Connected with thinking or conscious mental processes
Example: Some of her cognitive functions have been impaired.

Cortisol
noun
Steroid hormone, in the glucocorticoid class of hormones; the primary stress hormone
Example: This stress response in the brain triggers production of cortisol, the main stress hormone.

Dopamine
noun
A compound present in the body as a neurotransmitter and a precursor of other substances including adrenaline
Example: It releases a shot of dopamine into your brain which gives you a warm glow.

Fatigue
noun
Extreme tiredness resulting from mental or physical exertion or illness
Example: She was suffering from fatigue.

Hormone
noun
A regulatory substance produced in an organism and transported in tissue fluids such as blood or sap to stimulate specific cells or tissues into action
Example: The pill is designed to release the hormone at certain times of the day when the body needs it most.

Isochronic tones
noun
Regular beats of a single tone that are used alongside monaural beats and binaural beats in the process called brainwave entertainment
Example: Isochronic tones do not require headphones because they use a single pulsating tone to penetrate the left and right hemispheres of the brain.

Jazz
noun
A type of modern music originally developed by African-Americans, with a rhythm in which the strong notes often come before the beat
Example: I've never really gone in for classical music, but I love jazz.

Melatonin
noun
A hormone in the body that produces changes in skin colour and is involved in controlling biorhythms such as our sleep pattern
Example: There is considerable evidence for functional interactions of melatonin and dopamine in the retina.

Neuromusicology
noun
A modern discipline devoted to the measurement of real-time processes in the human brain while perceiving and producing sound
Example: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the essence of neuromusicology, which deals with the function of the brain in music processing.

The scientific study of the nervous system and the brain

Norepinephrine
noun
A hormone that helps keep blood pressure at a constant level, especially if it falls too low
Example: The norepinephrine and serotonin systems spread throughout the brain, while dopamine circuits are more specifically targeted.

Percussion
noun
Musical instruments that you play by hitting them with your hand or an object such as a stick
Example: Drums, tambourines, and cymbals are all percussion instruments.

Sensory stimulation
noun
The activation of one or more of the senses including taste, smell, vision, hearing, and touch
Example: In a nursing interaction, for example, the suckling responses of the infant provide the sensory stimulation that activates the milk let-down response of the mother.
