I made this glossary along with the presentation of my choice (any selected topic) for the university course called English for specific purposes. It includes some specific terms.
appointment
noun
It is an arrangement to meet the doctor and patient at a particular time in the clinic.
Example: By ghastly bad luck, she'd had a dental appointment not long after mine.

braces (dental)
noun
A set of wires attached to a person’s teeth to move them gradually in order to straighten them.
Example: She was a fifth-grader when she got braces to correct an overbite and a gap between her two front teeth.

cord
noun
Thin, flexible string or rope made from several twisted strands.
Example: The first braces were made of cord from animal skin attached to teeth the same way a modern dentist would attach wire braces.

adjective
Not carefully or expertly made.
Example: Some of the very first braces were crude designs found on mummies in ancient Egypt.

dentistry

The treatment of diseases and other conditions that affect the teeth and gums, especially the repair and extraction of teeth and the insertion of artificial ones.
Example: Dentistry, also known as dental medicine and oral medicine, is the branch of medicine focused on the teeth, gums, and mouth. Dental treatments are carried out by a dental team, which often consists of a dentist and dental auxiliaries (dental assistants, dental hygienists, dental technicians, as well as dental therapists).

invisalign
noun
Invisalign is a proprietary method of orthodontic treatment which uses a series of clear, removable teeth aligners used as an alternative to traditional metal dental braces.
Example: Invisalign is often a great option for those who do not wish to wear braces.

lingual
adjective
Lingual braces are a type of braces that are placed behind the teeth, facing the tongue and palate, instead of in front of the teeth like traditional ones.
Example: There are numerous benefits of lingual braces. They are less visible since they are placed at the back of the teeth, they allow for easier teeth cleaning, and don't break off as easily as traditional braces.

lisps
noun
A speech defect in which s is pronounced like th in thick and z is pronounced like th in this.
Example: It can happen to any child, for example my own daughter has an interdental lisp, and she has never sucked her thumb or a dummy, doesn’t have a tongue thrust swallow, and her mum is a speech pathologist!

malocclusion
noun
Imperfect positioning of the teeth when the jaws are closed.
Example: Pediatric dentists can identify malocclusion early and actively intervene to guide the teeth as they emerge in the mouth.

metal
noun
A solid material which is typically hard, shiny, malleable, fusible, and ductile, with good electrical and thermal conductivity (e.g. iron, gold, silver, and aluminium, and alloys such as steel).
Example: Metal braces are the most widely used type of dental braces in the world. Stainless steel or steel with gilding in combination with nickel titanium are used for their production.

Having an incorrect position or alignment.
Example: If your teeth are misaligned, they likely look crooked, twisted, or spaced.

Example: These are a few examples of the many adult orthodontic problems that Dr. Beckwith and our Mountain View Orthodontics team have corrected.

Example: Some orthodontists feel that it is important for the top and bottom chewing surfaces to meet to allow for favorable settling to occur.

A sticky deposit on teeth in which bacteria proliferate.
Example: Plaque around gum margins can lead to gingivitis.

retainer
noun
A fixed or removable device worn in the mouth to hold the teeth in their new position during the adaptive period after straightening appliances have been removed.
Example: When you're finished with treatment, doctor will provide you with a retainer to keep the teeth in place.

self-ligating
adjective
Self-ligating braces straighten teeth using brackets and an archwire, without the use of colored rubber bands.
Example: In the case of your more traditional braces, the orthodontist uses elastics to keep the archwire on the bracket. In self-ligating braces, the archwire is held in place by the bracket itself by closing a small, spring-loaded door.

The Etruscans

Members of an ancient people of Etruria, Italy, between the Tiber and Arno rivers west and south of the Apennines,.
Example: The Etruscans, in what we now know as Italy, buried their dead with appliances that maintained spaces and prevented collapse of their teeth and jaws during life. Archaeologists have discovered mummified remains in various locations that have metal bands wrapped around the teeth.

to floss
verb
Clean between (one's teeth) with dental floss.
Example: Additionally, 20% of adults refuse to floss their teeth at all.

wire
noun
Metal drawn out into the form of a thin flexible thread or rod.
Example: If you have braces, a thin wire called an archwire runs through brackets that are attached to your teeth.

x-rays
noun
A photographic or digital image of the internal composition of something, especially a part of the body, produced by X-rays being passed through it and being absorbed to different degrees by different materials.
Example: The most familiar use of X-rays is checking for fractures (broken bones), but X-rays are also used in other ways. For example, chest X-rays can spot pneumonia. Mammograms use X-rays to look for breast cancer.
