A glossary is an alphabetical list of technical words, terms or phases that you will come across in your research.
During your research use this glossary to hear the word spoken and find a definition.
Aboriginal
noun
a native inhabitant of a place. Often used to refer to the native peoples of mainland Australia.
Example: There are many different Aboriginal languages.
culture
noun
the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular group of people or society.
Example: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's strong connection to family, land, language is an important part of their culture.
custodian
noun
a person who has responsibility for taking care of or protecting something.
Example: First Nations Australians believe themselves to be custodians of the land.
elder
noun
A leader in Aboriginal communities who is respected and consulted due to their experience, wisdom, knowledge, background and insight. Often described as the "custodians of knowledge". They are not necessarily older.
Example: The elders hold the knowledge.
First Nations People
noun
Another term for Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or Indigenous Australian's. The native inhabitants to Australia and the Torres Strait Islands.
Example: First Nations Australians have a long and rich history.
Macassan/ Makassar/ Makasar
noun
Macassan/ Makassar/ Makasar the people from the region of Sulawesi in Indonesia.
Example: The Macassans traded with the people of Arnhem land.
ochre
noun
ochre is a native clay soil coloured with hydrated iron oxide. It varies in colour from pale yellow to deep red, brown, and violet.
Example: First Nations Australian's mined for ochre.
Torres Strait Islander
noun
Refers to the First Nations people indigenous to the Torres Strait region.
Example: Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders are both First Nations Australians.
