This glossary is to help everyone understand the vocabulary related to my field of study which is Police Technology. I know some terms can be difficult to understand or new to some readers so this glossary is to help you develop a better understanding of the vocabulary used in this blog. These police related terms will often be used in this blog. Hopefully this helps any reader and makes your lecture easier!
accused
noun
A person or persons charged with a crime.
Example: The accused was ordered to stand trial on a number of charges.

active shooter
noun
An individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area.
Example: There is an active shooter in our school.

alibi
noun
A form of defense used in criminal procedure wherein the accused attempts to prove that he or she was in some other place at the time the alleged offense was committed.
Example: She has an alibi for the whole of yesterday evening.

verb
To seize and hold under the authority of law.
Example: The guy from the store is under arrest.

bulletproof vest
noun
A vest capable of resisting the impact of a bullet.
Example: My bullet proof vest saved my life.

cause of death
noun
The action that caused the death.
Example: The victime had a blow to the head.

Accuse someone of something, especially an offense under law.
Example: They were charged with assault.

A tribunal presided over by a judge, judges, or a magistrate in civil and criminal cases.
Example: She will take the matter to court.

The place where an offense has been committed and forensic evidence may be gathered.
Example: Fingerprints left at a crime scene.

A list of a person's previous criminal convictions.
Example: The court said his criminal record would be expunged at the end of the year.

crowd control
noun
The management of crowds at sporting events, demonstrations, etc, to prevent trouble.
Example: His troops and officers had no experience of crowd control.

noun
A formal or explicit statement or announcement.
Example: They issued a declaration at the close of the talks.

detective
noun
A person, especially a police officer, whose occupation is to investigate and solve crimes.
Example: Detectives are anxious to interview anyone who saw the car.

emergency vehicle
noun
A vehicle that is used by emergency services to respond to an incident.
Example: My emergency vehicle is very loud.

evidence
noun
A sign which shows that something exists or is true. Material presented to a court to help find the truth about something.
Example: The study finds little evidence of overt discrimination.

noun
A fine is a penalty that requires the convicted person to pay to the public treasure a sum of money fixed by law after an offense has been committed.
Example: The fine may be increased if the payment deadlines are not respected.

A rifle, pistol, or other portable gun.
Example: Jones pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm with criminal intent.

A person seized or held as security for the fulfillment of a condition.
Example: Three hostages were released but only after their families paid an estimated $200,000 to the guerrillas.

The action of investigating something or someone; formal or systematic examination or research.
Example: He is under investigation for receiving illicit funds.
