Air Ball
noun
The ball misses the hoop and backboard entirely.
Example: Anthony made an air ball.

Alley-oop
noun
A high arc pass to a teammate in a position near the basket to leap and score.
Example: He passes to Marc, who does an alley-oop.
assist
noun
A pass that sets up a score.
Example: Leanne did 10 assist in the last game.
back door cut
noun
A player approaches quickly from behind a defender toward the basket.
Example: His back door (cut) was so clean.
Back screen
noun
An offensive player moves away from the basket to set a screen for teammate.
Example: Coach A ask to do a back screen on the next offense.
Ball fake
noun
To fake a pass or shot.
Example: Her ball fake make the defender late on defense.
baselines
noun
Also known as "end lines", the boundary lines extending across both ends of the court behind the baskets.
Example: Coach Harry makes us run baselines.
basket

behind-the-back dribble
noun
A dribble from one hand to the other behind the back.
Example: I worked this practice on my behind-the-back dribble.
box out
noun
In an attempt to block an opponent and set up rebound opportunities, a defense player gets between a teammate and the basket.
Example: After every shot of the adverse team we've got to do box out.
carrying the ball

Also called "palming"; an illegal dribbling of the ball with both hands at the same time, turning the ball over in your hands, or placing the hands underneath the ball as if holding or carrying it.
Example: Alex is carrying the ball to much.
catch and face

Catching a pass and turning directly toward the basket before taking a shot.
Example: When you receive the ball you have to catch and face the basket.
charging

An offensive player fouls by illegally contacting a stationary defense player.

Chest Pass
noun
A chest-to-chest pass with both hands.
Example: For this move it's better to do a chest pass.
clear out
noun
To make room for the ball handler.
Example: The guard ask to clear out for her.
court
The floor upon which the game of basketball is played.
Example: In the beginning of the season, the coaches make all the team run on the court.
cylinder
noun
The closely guarded circular area above the basket.
Example: you can go in the cylinder of the offender.
double dribble
noun
The illegal act of dribbling, stopping, then dribbling again.
Example: The ref called double dribble on my action.
drive
noun
A brisk advance toward the basket with the aim of shooting.
Example: You have to drive fast to let your teammate score.
dunk
noun
Slamming the ball into the basket.
Example: A lot of girls starts to dunk.
fast break
noun
A rush down court to beat the opponent to the basket.
Example: Run the fast break!
free-throw
noun
A free shot taken from the foul line awarded a player whose opponent committed a foul.
Example: She missed her 2 free-throw.
Front Court

The offensive area running from mid-court to the end-line.
Example: ref : "Coach ! you want the ball front court or back court?"
Goal-tending
noun
Intercepting a shot that is either in the basket, or directly above it.
Example: He goal-tending his shot.
Hand Check
noun
A defender fouls by touching the opposing ball handler with one or both hands too many times.
Example: It's a foul to hand shake the opponent.
in the paint

Refers to the area within the free-throw lane that is painted a different color than the rest of the court.
Example: For the system you have to put your two feet in the paint.
jab step
noun
Small sharp step with the non-pivot foot toward the defense player.
Example: You've got to work on your jab step.
Key
noun
The free-throw and foul lane area of the court.
Example: Don't stop your dribble in the key.
Lay-up
noun
Advancing close to the basket in an effort to bank a shot off the backboard.
Example: One lay-up it's 2 points.
Possession
noun
To have the ball.
Example: One possession last 24 secondes.
Post Up
noun
To be in a position near, but facing away from, the basket in order to receive a pass.
Example: She post up on him while the tournament.
Push Pass
noun
A strategy used to get past a defender guarding too closely.
Example: When the defender is to close, make a push pass.
Quadruple Double
noun
A player earns two-digit figures in four out of five offensive categories during a single game.
Example: It's historical! she made a quadruple double in final.
Rebound
noun
Gaining possession of the ball after it bounces off the backboard or rim on a missed shot.
Example: The offensive rebounds are as much important than the defensive rebounds.
Reverse Pivot

Turning on the pivot foot while taking a step back.
Example: His reverse pivot was so clean at the last game.
Rocker Step
noun
A jab step followed by a step back in preparation for shooting or driving the ball.
Example: It's not easy to make a rocker step.
shot-clock
noun
A device that keeps track of the limited time the team in possession of the ball has to take a shot at the basket.
Example: The guard have to look at shot-clock all the game.
Spacing
noun
The space between offensive players, generally 15-18 feet.
Example: One of the first thing you learn in basketball is to keep the spacing during the game.
Stride Stop
noun
Stopping on one foot, and then the other.
Example: His stride stop wasn't clean.
substitute
noun
A player comes in to replace a teammate on the court.
Example: Sometimes a substitute is just here to let breathe the player who was on the court.
Team fouls
noun
The number of fouls that a team has against it before going over the limit and its opponent is awarded a free-throw.
Example: When you've got 5 team fouls the opponent got free free throws.
Three-second Violation

An offensive player is in the free-throw lane for longer than three seconds.
Example: the ref called a three second violation for me.
Tip Off
noun
The jump that starts the game.
Example: We start this game with an agressive tip off.
Top-of-the-key
phrase
The arc that runs beyond the free-throw lane.
Example: post have to go on the top of the key.
Transition
noun
A team switches from offense to defense, and visa versa.
Example: The transition of this team is really fast.
trap
noun
Two defense players team up on the ball handler.
Example: The place to make a trap is towards the side lines and the baseline.
Traveling
Also known as "walking"; a violation in which the ball handler takes fewer than two steps without dribbling, or holds the ball while changing or moving the pivot foot.
Example: He made 3 step; we call that travelling.
Turnover

The offensive team gives the ball up to defense.
Example: The offensive team gives the ball up to defense.
Violation
noun
Breaking of a rule not resulting in a free-throw, but rather a throw-in.
