Originating Depository Financial Institution (ODFI)

The ODFI receives payment instructions from Originators and forwards them to the ACH Operator. A DFI can participate in the ACH Network as a Receiving DFI (RDFI) without being an ODFI, but if it wants to originate ACH entries, it must also act as an RDFI.
