This is a glossary made for the course of Computer Assisted Translation (LIT - 41). The terms in this glossary were provided by Professor Erika Sandoval; and online dictionary sources were used for their definition. The purpose of this glossary is to learn how to use online glossaries, which is a very important tool for translators.
CAT
noun
Software applications that support the translation of text from one language to another.
Example: CAT tools are a great help to the translator.

Copy-writitng
noun
The activity or occupation of writing the text of advertisements or publicity material.
Example: Copy-writing for businesses is another area with many opportunities for new writers.

Interpretation
noun
To convert spoken language from one language to another, in real time; this process is usually carried out by a professional interpreter.
Example: The interpreter carried out a simultaneous interpretation.

Language Pair
noun
As used by translators and interpreters, language pair refers to two languages a professional is able to translate from one to the other.
Example: Language pair is not the only specialization of a professional translator.

Literal Translation
noun
Is a translation of a text done by translating each word separately, without looking at how the words are used together in a phrase or sentence.
Example: This is not a literal translation of his words.

Localization
noun
Is the process of adapting a product's translation to a specific country or region.
Example: Localization transforms the entire product or content from one language to another.

Machine translation (MT)
noun
Sometimes referred to by the abbreviation MT, is a sub-field of computational linguistics that investigates the use of software to translate text or speech from one language to another.
Example: Machine translation systems and other multilingual tools, including dictionaries, thesaurus and classification systems in support of multilinguism.

Proof-reading

Is the process of examining a text and looking for spelling, grammar, syntax and punctuation errors, typos and other unintended mistakes.
Example: Proof-reading is done by a professional translator who revises the final version of a translated text prior to publishing.

Source culture
noun
Refers to the culture contained in the original language of a text.
Example: The source culture refers to the culture of teachers and learners, which in the paper is the Indonesian culture.

Source language
noun
A language which is to be translated into another language
Example: The system lists the phrase library, phrase group, phrase key, and source language in the upper section of the screen.

Target Culture
noun
The target culture is the culture in which the translated documents are intended.
Example: This allows us to successfully localize your content for the required target culture.

Target language

A language into which another language is to be translated
Example: However, in the case of languages courses, courses must in addition take place in a country where the target language is widely spoken.

Transcreation
noun
Is a concept used in the field of translation studies to describe the process of adapting a message from one language to another, while maintaining its intent, style, tone, and context.
Example: Transcreation - adapting your market branding and copy for multicultural communication.

Transcription
noun
A transcription of a conversation or speech is a written text of it, based on a recording or notes.
Example: I hope that the transcription of the tape will allay your concerns.

Translation memory
noun
Is a database that stores sentences, paragraphs or segments of text that have been translated before.
Example: It is an expert workflow, machine translation and translation memory technology.
