This glossary contains the words learned during the first part of the second semester of architecture.

Air-entrained concrete

low-density type of concrete throughout which small air bubbles are dispersed in order to increase its frost resistance.
Example: Air-entrained concrete is used to make roads.

Asphalt Concrete is a composite material commonly used in construction of roads, highways, airports, parking lots, and many other types of pavement.
Example: The asphalt concrete of the road is in good condition when there is no rainfall.

Example: Since the first cities were built, there have been major axes: main streets that have become important as a communicating element, capable of rationalizing space and urbanizing the city around it. They create a great influence on the architecture that is projected around them, capable of supporting the great movements that are created from it.

Common interiors walls (backup walls) are cold-formed steel framed walls with water-resistant sheathing and concrete masonry.
Example: back-up walls combine air barrier, vapor barrier, moisture control and insulation in an all-in-one product.

Is a layer of the same unit running horizontally in a wall. It can also be defined as a continuous row of any masonry unit such as bricks, concrete masonry units (CMU), stone, shingles, tiles, etc.
Example: The Standard states that the laying of brick courses on the first working day must reach a maximum height of 1.30 m, which is equivalent to 12 or 13 courses.

Cellular concrete
Noun
also known as lightweight cellular concrete, low-density cellular concrete is a cement-based suspension with a minimum of 20% foam entrained in the mortar.
Example: Lightweight cellular concrete is the ideal lightweight solution design needs and offers a strong cost/value advantage for lightweight infill construction.

Colored concrete is a type of concrete in which pigments are added to give it color.

Green concrete is defined as a concrete which uses waste material as at least one of its components, or its production process does not lead to environmental destruction, or it has high performance and life cycle sustainability.
Example: Some architects, builders and engineers are turning to environmentally responsible green concrete construction with new concrete formulations that help conserve non-renewable resources and reduce the CO2 emissions problem.

Noun
Means a thing attached to or suspended from another by the upper part, without support from the lower part.
Example: The fan is hanging off from the ceiling

Horizontal mortar joints

It is the small space left between the two surfaces of the ashlars or bricks immediately next to each other in a construction that is filled with mortar or cement in order to join them and bind them solidly.
Example: The straight, sloping surfaces of the bedding (horizontal) joints tend to catch the light and give the masonry a clean, neat appearance.

Insulating concrete

A reinforced concrete form works, system generally made with rigid thermal insulation that remains in place as a permanent interior and exterior substrate for walls, floors, and ceilings.
Example: insulating concrete has been used to bridge decks, abutments and girders, among other things.
