- Authentic Assessment
- A method or technique for assessing the competency mastery of a learner that includes activities requiring the application of acquired knowledge, skills, abilities and behaviors to real-world situations.

- Coach
- Also known as a success coach, academic coach, retention coach, graduation coach, and others; the coach supports the learner throughout Competency-Based Education program completion. Some typical aspects of coaching include identifying student’s strengths and goals to create a personal plan of action for the completion of a program, connecting students to campus and community resources, utilizing program analytics to monitor student progression, motivating students to ensure engagement, providing non-academic support, and serving as a liaison between students, faculty, and Academic Success Center Staff. The roles of the coach are typically determined by the individual institution.
- Competency
- A piece of knowledge, a skill, an ability, and an intellectual behavior that is observable, measurable, and relevant in a given context.
- Competency-Based Education
- Competency-based education is a method of academic instruction and evaluation based upon students demonstrating mastery of a subject. Competency-based education (CBE) is focused on actual student learning, and the application of that learning, rather than time spent in class. In CBE, a learner's progress is measured when they demonstrate their competence through a system of rigorous assessments, meaning they prove they have mastered the knowledge and skills, required for a particular competency or area of study.
- Credential
- The official documented credit that validates an individual's competency at the required level of mastery. A credential is an institutional guarantee of the learner's ability to demonstrate an identified set of competencies. Examples of credentials are a degree, certificate, or diploma.
