My name is Laetitia Leduc and I’m a student at Ahuntsic College. It’s currently my third year in Youth and Adult delinquency intervention and through those years, I conceive that a lot of important terms can be difficult to understand. In sociology, we are working with different people who need our professionalism to improve themselves and go through a lot of things, if we don’t understand the terms in our field of study/work it could ruin our intervention. That’s why I made a 20 words glossary with definitions, pictures, French translations and the wright pronunciations for all of them. I compiled those specific terms by using my school books and some on the internet. I would like it if you used this glossary as reference to improve your intervention skills or only to help you to have a professional language during discussions with your partner.
Burn-out
noun
extreme tiredness usually caused by working too much
Example: The employees are complaining suffering burn-out.

child abuse
noun
behaviour in which adults intentionally treat children in a cruel or violent way
Example: This child is a victim of child abuse.

Child welfare
noun
a set of government services designed to protect children and encourage family stability
Example: She is in the child welfare system since is 12.

Codeine
noun
A drug made from opium that is used to reduce pain
Example: He need to take codeine to reduce his pain.

dark web
noun
parts of the internet that are encrypted, that cannot be found using ordinary search engines, and that are sometimes used for criminal activity
Example: The dark web can provide a haven for extremist groups to exchange ideas.

Delinquency
noun
behaviour, especially of a young person, that is illegal or not acceptable to most people
Example: There is a high rate of juvenile delinquency in this area.

detoxification center

a place similar to a hospital where people go to receive treatment for drinking too much alcohol or taking too many drugs
Example: This guy went to a detoxification center for the past month.

ecstasy
noun
a state of extreme happiness, especially when feeling pleasure
Example: She threw her head back as if in ecstasy.

Hallucination
noun
an experience in which you see, hear, feel, or smell something that does not exist, usually because you are ill or have taken a drug
Example: A high temperature can cause hallucinations.

Hostage
Noun
someone who is taken as a prisoner by an enemy in order to force the other people involved doing what the enemy wants

a drug used to reduce or remove the effects of taking too much of an opioid drug

too much of a drug taken or given at one time, either intentionally or by accident

Probation officer
