21 Pathology and other health problems terms

My name is Catherine. I have been studying Nursing at the Cégep for two years. This glossary is for other student like me. It explains 21 common pathologies and health problem. I made it for help other student remembering the English name of these pathologies and health problem. I used my nursing books to find the word. I compared the definitions of my books with those I found to make sure they were the correct definition. I wish this glossary will help to know the English words when you work with English-speaker patient.

asthma
noun
Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out and shortness of breath.
Example: His 15-year-old son also suffers from ASTHMA, although it is well-controlled.

brain concussion
noun
A concussion, also known as a mild traumatic brain injury, is a head injury that temporarily affects brain functioning.
Example: The effects of a brain concussion can be serious.

diabetes
noun
Diabetes is a disease in which your body either can't produce insulin or can't properly use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone produced by your pancreas. Insulin's role is to regulate the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood.
Example: Type 1 DIABETES develops when the beta cells have been destroyed, possibly by an abnormal reaction of the body to the cells, triggered by a viral or other infection.

A condition characterized by an excess of watery fluid collecting in the cavities or tissues of the body.
Example: Too much salt from your diet can make edema worse.

glaucoma
noun
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the health of which is vital for good vision. This damage is often caused by an abnormally high pressure in your eye.
Example: At first, glaucoma doesn’t usually have any symptoms.

hypothyroidism
noun
Abnormally low activity of the thyroid gland, resulting in slowing of growth and mental development in children and metabolic changes in adults.
Example: Iodine deficiencies cause goiter, which is the swelling of the thyroid gland, and hypothyroidism.

A small localized area of dead tissue resulting from failure of blood supply.
Example: The lack of associated weakness indicates that this was not a normal infarct affecting the motor cortex.

A malignant progressive disease in which the bone marrow and other blood-forming organs produce increased numbers of immature or abnormal leukocytes.
Example: Leukemia is grouped by how fast it develops and gets worse, and by which type of blood cell is involved.

An infectious viral disease causing fever and a red rash on the skin, typically occurring in childhood.
Example: My sister caught measles.

meningitis

Inflammation of the meninges caused by viral or bacterial infection and marked by intense headache and fever, sensitivity to light, and muscular rigidity, leading (in severe cases) to convulsions, delirium, and death.
Example: The complications include blood infection, MENINGITIS in mother and many detrimental effects to the baby.

A chronic, typically progressive disease involving damage to the sheaths of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, whose symptoms may include numbness, impairment of speech and of muscular coordination, blurred vision, and severe fatigue.
Example: It is not easy to live with multiple sclerosis.

noun
Degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone, most common from middle age onward. It causes pain and stiffness, especially in the hip, knee, and thumb joints.
Example: My grandmother suffers from osteoarthritis.

Lung inflammation caused by bacterial or viral infection, in which the air sacs fill with pus and may become solid.
Example: Pneumonia is a commune infection of the lungs.

A contagious viral disease, with symptoms like mild measles. It can cause fetal malformation if contracted in early pregnancy.
Example: The best protection against rubella is MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine.

Example: He made a sprain at his ankle during his soccer game.
