This glossary is intended to familiarize me with the English words used in medicine because are the terms used here.
Aneurysm
noun
Localized dilation of the walls of an artery forming a pocket full of blood.
Example: Although it is impossible to determine the precise cause of the emboli without further investigation, there was no evidence to suggest the presence of atrial fibrillation or an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Antibody
noun
Special defense protein that appears in the blood when a foreign substance (antigen) is introduced into the body.
Example: This antibody if administered from early childhood, possibly through diet, might be effective at preventing intestinal infection.

Biopsy
noun
Histological and histochemical examination of a tissue or organic sample from living organisms for diagnosis.
Example: Diagnosis of ARVD can often be difficult and the diagnosis is based on investigations including ECG, echo, myocardial biopsy and the gold standard investigation an MRI scan .

Blood glucose
noun
Amount of sugar (glucose) normally present in the blood.
Example: A number of recent studies have demonstrated a clear link between the many complications of Diabetes Mellitus and a history of poorly controlled BLOOD GLUCOSE (Hill, 2004; Sumner and Dyson, 2004).

Cast
noun
A bandage stiffened with plaster of Paris, molded to the shape of a limb that is broken, and used to support and protect it.
Example: I got cast yesterday because I broke my wrist.

Catheter
Noun
A hollow or solid rod-shaped instrument used to dilate or probe a natural duct or blood vessel into which it is introduced or to remove an obstacle in it.
Example: Mr went into acute urinary retention following admission and was fitted with a suprapubic catheter .

Cyst
noun
Small cavity that forms in the body. It contains different substances (fat, fiber, etc.).
Example: He has in addition an arachnid cyst in the left hemisphere which most likely bears no relevance to his presenting symptoms.

Dialysis
Noun
Extrarenal cleansing method to extract excess toxic waste in the blood, in the case of renal insufficiency.
Example: My friend needs dialysis because his kidneys are malfunctioning.

ECG ( Electrocardiogramme)

Epidural
noun
Injected between the vertebrae to suppress the sensitivity of the part of the body below the point of injection.
Example: My mother took an epidural during the delivery of my brother.

Fertilization
Noun
Fertilization is the stage of sexual reproduction consisting of a fusion of gametes, usually a male gamete and a female gamete in a single cell called zygote.
Example: Fertilization is one of the essential steps for human reproduction.

Heart attack
noun
Part of an organ destroyed as a result of a stop in the circulation of blood, in the arteries that fed it.
Example: My grandfather died of a heart attack.

Suitable for stopping the flow of blood.
Example: During the surgery, the surgeon has to stop the bleeding with a hemostatic forceps.

Hepatitis
Noun
Inflammatory disease of the liver.
Example: My friend got hepatitis once because she drank too much alcohol.

Necrosis
Noun
Destruction of a small part of an organ.
Example: Peripheral vascular disease has the potential to cause further foot problems for Alice, such as ischemia, which can lead to ulceration and NECROSIS and severely impairs wound healing and normal inflammatory responses to infection.

Quincke's edema
Significant swelling of the face and sometimes the inside of the throat, which can cause death by choking.
Example: My friend’s allergy led to quincke oedema.

Rhesus
Noun
Substance normally present in the blood that can create problems during a transfusion.The usual abbreviations are "Rh+" and "Rh-". With groups "A", "B" and "O", it gives "A+", "A-", "B+", etc.
Example: My roommate has a blood type of rhesus B+.

Scalpel
noun
A knife-shaped surgical instrument with a fixed or folding blade that is used to make incisions.
Example: A scalpel for cutting soft tissues of the body with an abrasive trailing surface.

A group of disorders that occur in a more or less significant way, among the victims of a violent event such as an accident or an attack.
Example: After the September 11 attack in New York City, many people suffer from SSPT .

STD ( Sexual transmissible disease)
abbreviation
A disease that can be transmitted during sex. Examples include AIDS, syphilis…). Some of these diseases are also transmitted in other ways (such as mycosis). In this case one cannot be certain of the sexual origin of the disease.
Example: Non-prorogrammed sex can lead to sexually transmitted diseases
