Asset
Noun
Property owned by a person or company, regarded as having value and available to meet debts, commitments, or legacies.
Example: Additionally, companies can offset any gains (or losses) on an ASSET with a similar loss (or gain) on the derivative used as a hedge.

Dividend
Noun
A sum of money paid regularly (typically quarterly) by a company to its shareholders out of its profits (or reserves).
Example: A limitation of this ratio is such that when an entity records a loss, no earnings are available but still a DIVIDEND is often paid.

Inflation
Noun
A general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money.
Example: The 1970s were a period of high and erratic INFLATION, the result of the oil price shocks and macroeconomic policies that again were probably too expansionary, especially in the latter part of the decade.

Noun
The capital raised by a business or corporation through the issue and subscription of shares.
Example: In 1857, however, the state had started encouraging the creation of private joint - STOCK companies for the construction of railways, with the result that investors had taken their money out of state banks and put it into railway - building.
