Conduction shape factor

Convection resistance

When a fluid comes into contact with a solid surface at a different temperature, the resulting process of thermal energy exchange is called convection heat transfer.

It depends on the thermal conductivity of the insulation k and the external convection heat transfer coefficient h.

Cylinder conduction resistance

If the temperatures of the fluids, inside and outside the cylinder, remain constant, then the heat transfer through that tube is stationary.

Fin effectiveness

Fin temperature effectiveness or fin efficiency is defined as the ratio of the actual heat transfer rate through the fin base divided by the maximum possible heat transfer rate through the base fin, which can be obtained if the entire fin is at base temperature.
Example: The performance of the fins is judged on the basis of the enhancement in heat transfer relative to the no-fin case and is expressed in terms of the fin effectiveness

Interface resistance

Decreased heat flow caused by imperfect contact between two materials at an interface.
Example: We discuss the effect on the different physical properties that interface resistance has in artificially grown materials in the form of heterostructures when their dimensions are on the nanometer scale.

Heat flows in a direction perpendicular to the surface. If the thermal conductivity is uniform

Thermal contact conductance

Thermal contact resistance

is the inverse thermal property to the contact conductivity
Example: thermal contact resistance is highly dependent on surface roughness. The pressure that holds the two surfaces together also influences the contact resistance

Total thermal resistance

Thermal resistance is a heat property and a measurement of a temperature difference by which an object or material resists a heat flow. Thermal resistance is the reciprocal of thermal conductance.
