Data collection is the process of gathering and measuring information on variables of interest, in an established systematic fashion that enables one to answer stated research questions, test hypotheses, and evaluate outcomes. The data collection component of research is common to all fields of study including physical and social sciences, humanities, business, etc. While methods vary by discipline, the emphasis on ensuring accurate and honest collection remains the same.

Design generalization

Generalization is a process of extracting shared characteristics from two or more objects/processes and combine them into generalizing objects/ processes. This high-level concept is being used everywhere for different purposes in traditional software engineering practices.

Diagnostic research
Noun
Diagnostic research is one of the research design types that aims to examine the underlying cause of a certain situation or phenomenon. It can help you find out more about the factors that lead to specific issues or challenges your customers might be facing.
Example: Clinical and Diagnostic Research. A diagnosis made on the basis of medical signs and patient-reported symptoms, rather than diagnostic tests. Laboratory diagnosis based significantly on laboratory reports or test results, rather than the physical examination of the patient..

Experimental research
Noun
Experimental research is research conducted with a scientific approach using two sets of variables. The first set acts as a constant, which you use to measure the differences of the second set. Quantitative research methods, for example, are experimental.
Example: These theories are only useful if they can be applied to EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH to answer the question of whether television and film violence is harmful to children.

Explanatory research
Noun
Explanatory research was carried out to investigate in a timely manner a phenomenon, that had not been studied before, or had not been well explained previously. Its intention is to provide details where a small amount of information exists.
The researcher gets a general idea and uses the research as a tool to guide him to issues that might be addressed in the future. Its goal is to find the why and what for an object of study.

Qualitative research

Qualitative research is a process of naturalistic inquiry that seeks an in-depth understanding of social phenomena within their natural setting. It focuses on the "why" rather than the "what" of social phenomena and relies on the direct experiences of human beings as meaning-making agents in their every day lives.
Example: (Morse, 1992 and Hollway and Jefferson, 2000) Holliday (2002) has identified that the difficulties associated with producing quality data increase with QUALITATIVE RESEARCH due to the close contact with participants.

Quantitative research
Noun
Quantitative research is defined as a systematic investigation of phenomena by gathering quantifiable data and performing statistical, mathematical, or computational techniques. Quantitative research collects information from existing and potential customers using sampling methods and sending out online surveys, online polls, questionnaires, etc., the results of which can be depicted in the form of numerical. After careful understanding of these numbers to predict the future of a product or service and make changes accordingly.
Example: The subjective nature of the modified Borg test could be seen to be at odds with the objective nature of QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH however the authors argue, using other research as evidence, that it is a reliable and valid measure of perceived breathlessness.

Research Design
Noun
Research design is the framework of research methods and techniques chosen by a researcher. The design allows researchers to hone in on research methods that are suitable for the subject matter and set up their studies up for success.
Example: The use of a RCT is appropriate for this RESEARCH DESIGN as the study is making measurements over the health changes observed between a control and intervention group, leading to quantitative results and analysis comparing the two variables using a large number of participants which are followed for a specific time period (Greenhalgh, 1997).

Survey research
Noun
Survey Research is defined as the process of conducting research using surveys that researchers send to survey respondents. The data collected from surveys is then statistically analyzed to draw meaningful research conclusions.
Example: Most often SURVEY RESEARCH is in keeping with the moral and ethical traditions of openness, truthfulness and confidentiality [if required]
. However, most SURVEY RESEARCH does not go as in depth as many observational studies have and so the ethical problems facing researchers using the former are far more limited.
