The main purpose of this glossary is to describe words related to the Law.

alibi
noun
A claim or piece of evidence that one was elsewhere when an act, typically a criminal one, is alleged to have taken place.
Example: But Marie is quickly ticked off the list of suspects, when her alibi proves convincing to the police.

alienation
noun
The voluntary and absolute transfer of title and possession of real property from one person to another.
Example: The criminal law faces problems due to alienation not only of the victims and witnesses, but of the public at large.

noun
A British or Canadian lawyer who speaks in the higher courts of law on behalf of either the defense or prosecution.

A document stating the facts and points of law of a client's case.

countersuit
noun
A suit brought against someone who has sued you.
Example: Samsung has announced its intention to file a countersuit against American Apple. ITAR-TASS, referring to the Spokesperson of South Korean company.

criminal law

A system of law concerned with the punishment of those who commit crimes.
Example: On his death he was widely hailed as the pre-eminent figure in modern international criminal law. Times, Sunday Times (2011).

criminal negligence
noun
Recklessly acting without reasonable caution and putting another person at risk of injury or death (or failing to do something with the same consequences).
Example: Rose LJ stated, "unless an identified individual's conduct characterized as gross criminal negligence can be attributed to the company, the company is not liable for manslaughter."

derogation
noun
An exemption from or relaxation of a rule or law.
Example: This was the fundamental ground of the strong emotional dislike of older abolitionists for internal polemics in the movement and distaste for any derogation from a transcendent commitment to the cause.

jurisprudence
noun
The branch of philosophy concerned with the law and the principles that lead courts to make the decisions they do.
Example: Matrimonial jurisprudence was primarily focused on this marital contract.

legal document
noun
A document that states some contractual relationship or grants some right.
Example: The Mental Health Act (MHA) 1983, is a legal document which outlines procedures and allows patients to be sectioned by a doctor for assessment and treatment (Turner 2005).

Laws, considered collectively.
Example: The policy initiatives proposed in this study include: revised institutional approaches to the development process, new legislation to allow for greater flexibility in negotiating development arrangements and project procurements, and an innovative program intended to make authority-owned development parcels accessible to a broader real estate investment and development market by breaking down the existing barriers to entry in to authority-sponsored development processes.

The unauthorized interference in a legal action by a person having no interest in it (as by helping one party with money or otherwise to continue the action) so as to obstruct justice or promote unnecessary litigation or unsettle the peace of the community.
Example: In relation to rent levels, dwelling maintenance and racial or other forms of discrimination, (d) allegations of any form of discrimination in the allocation and availability of access to housing (e) complaints against landlords concerning unhealthy or inadequate housing conditions" and, in some legal systems, "class action suits in situations involving significantly increased levels of homelessness".

A criminal code (or penal code) is a document which complies all, or a significant amount of, a particular jurisdiction's criminal law.
Example: Demonstrated by the considerable efforts of the newly created United Nations, over the next few years, "an international momentum began to build" towards creating a comprehensive international penal code that would promote accountability and deter violations of international law.

power of attorney
noun
A legal instrument authorizing someone to act as the grantor's agent.
Example: She has lived in for twenty years. has three sons and one daughter; however, until recently the only family member she related to was her daughter-in-law, , who is also her main carer and power of attorney.

privatization
noun
Changing something from state to private ownership or control.
Example: Policy implications for this new political economy model include the opening up national economies to trade, conformity of domestic prices to international market prices, privatization of state-owned enterprises and the maintenance of private property rights (Santos 167).

set aside
noun
Annul (a legal decision).
Example: After the EA 2002, a part of the company's property will be set aside to form a fund for the unsecured creditors before allowing the floating charge holders to collect their full claim.

sex crime
noun
A statutory offense that provides that it is a crime to knowingly cause another person to engage in an unwanted sexual act by force or threat.

An act passed by a legislative body.
Example: As their reasoning forms a precedent for future cases, when faced with a new point of controversy within a statute, theoretically the courts should seek an interpretation corresponding to the parliamentary intention behind that statute.

Supreme Court

The highest judicial tribunal in a political unit (such as a nation or state).
Example: University of California, Davis, (1978) where the supreme court decided in favour of affirmative action but rejected the implementation of strict quotas in the college admissions and observed that "the attainment of a diverse student body clearly is a constitutionally permissible goal for an institution of higher education".
