20 Social Science Psychology terms

I'm Aurelie Dufour and I'm a student in Social Intervention and Psychology at Ahuntsic College. I'm actually at my last session (second years) In psychology, there's a lot of complex terms that will be regularly used so there a glossary for some of the most used and seen words in psychology. Those 20 word were regularly coming back in my notes, it was the reason why I selected them for you to have access to an easy way to know what those terms mean.

Anxiety
noun
An intense emotional response caused by the preconscious recognition that a repressed conflict is about to emerge into consciousness.
Example: Most student feel a lot of anxiety during college.

Attitude
noun
An enduring, learned predisposition to behave in a consistent way toward a given class of object. events, or people.
Example: His attitude toward them was unacceptable!

Behaviorism
proper noun
The theory that human and animal behavior can be explain in term of conditioning, without appeal to thoughts or feelings, and that psychological disorders are best treated by altering behavior patterns.
Example: Today, in class, we learned about Behaviorism.

Behavioural Approach
proper noun
The behavioral approach is based on the concept of explaining behavior through observation, and the belief that our environment is what causes us to behave differently or suffer from illness.
Example: John Broadus Watson is considered the father of the Behavioural Approach.

Bipolar Disorder
proper noun
A mental illness that brings severe high and low moods and changes in sleep, energy, thinking, and behavior.
Example: She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Butterfly Effect
noun
Notion that an effect or a trivial thing can have serious consequences if it cause an imbalance and cause other changes that create a big upheaval.
Example: How to clearly explain the butterfly effect?

Causality
noun
Causality, or causation, is the relation between an event and a second event, where the second event is understood as a consequence of the first.
Example: It's important to know the difference between correlation and causality.

Child Development
noun
Child development refers to the biological, psychological and emotional changes that occur in human being between birth and the end of adolescence, as the individual progresses from dependency to increasing autonomy.
Example: Freud based his theory on child development.

Coping
verb
Expending conscious effort to solve personal and interpersonal problems, and seeking to master, minimize or tolerate stress or conflict.
Example: He was coping with a lot of stress last summer.

Dependence
noun
The real need of the organism, or something that individuals can't provide for themselves.
Example: Having a dependence to substance like drugs is hard to get rid of.

Disposition
noun
A natural or acquired habit or characteristic tendency in a person or thing.
Example: If your parents had mental disorder, you might have a disposition to some disorder.

Empathic Listening
noun
A way of listening and responding to another person that improves mutual understanding and trust.
Example: Being a future psychologist you need to perfect your empathic listening.

Intervention
noun
Any measure whose purpose is to improve health or alter the course of a disease.
Example: In youth center and rehab, there's a lot of intervention for those who are there.

Memory
noun
The process in which information is encoded, stored, and retrieved.
Example: When you're in an exam, you're soliciting your memory.

Mental Disability
nouns
A mental anomaly that causes either suffering or an impaired ability to function in ordinary life, and which is not developmentally or socially normative.
Example: Psychiatrists are treating people with mental disability.

Mental Health

Psychological well-being and satisfactory adjustment to society and to the ordinary demands of life.
Example: It's important to take care of your mental health.

Phobia
noun
An extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something.
Example: All kinds of phobias are though to deal alone with.

The scientific study of all form of human and animal behavior, sometimes concerned with the methods through which behavior can be modified.
Example: Psychology is a branch of Social Science, with sociology, for example.

Stimulus
noun
Any phenomenon that causes a reaction or response in an organism.
Example: The brain receive and treats all kinds of stimuli.

Variables
noun
Factors or conditions that affect or may affect the knows behavior of an individual or a group.
Example: The variables are the most important thing in an experimentation.
