This is glossary for the CALL terms made for the TELL class.
Behaviourism
noun
a school of psychology that regards the objective observation of the behaviour of organisms (usually using automatic recording devices) as the only proper subject for study and that often refuses to postulate any intervening mechanisms between the stimulus and the response.
Example: Behaviourims was widely accepted back in the 60's.
Blog
verb
add new material to or regularly update a blog.
Example: It's about a week since I last blogged.
Blog
noun
a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.
Example: I would like to have a travel blog.
Browser
noun
a computer program with a graphical user interface for displaying and navigating between web pages.
Example: Mozilla is a commonly used web browser.
CALL
acronym
Computer Asisted Language Learning
Example: The use CALL is widely accepted nowadays between the teaching community.
CD-ROM
noun
"Compact Disc Read-Only Memory." A compact disc used as a read-only optical memory device for a computer system.
Example: Nowadays, nobody uses CD-ROMs anymore.
Digital gap
noun
the gulf between those who have ready access to computers and the internet, and those who do not.
Example: A huge digital gap exists between France and Ethiopia.
Digital native
noun
a person born or brought up during the age of digital technology and so familiar with computers and the internet from an early age.
Example: Most of the Generation Z are digital natives.
EFL
acronym
English Foreign Language
Example: There are several EFL teaching methods and approaches.
ESL
acronym
English as a Second Language.
Example: Cyber Listening Lab helps ESL and EFL learners improve their English listening comprehension.
Grammar-Translation Approach
noun
It is a method of teaching foreign languages derived from the classical method of teaching Greek and Latin. In grammar-translation classes, students learn grammatical rules and then apply those rules by translating sentences between the target language and the native language.
Example: In grammar–translation classes, students learn grammatical rules.
HTML
noun
Hypertext Markup Language, a standardized system for tagging text files to achieve font, colour, graphic, and hyperlink effects on World Wide Web pages.
Example: An HTML file.
Hypermedia
noun
an extension to hypertext providing multimedia facilities, such as those handling sound and video.
Example: Ms. Merkel is patently uninterested in the trappings of leadership in the modern, hypermedia age.
ICT
noun
Information and Communication Technology. It refers to technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications.
Example: Zoom has widely spread as the number 1 ICT software available.
Internet
noun
A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.
Example: "the guide is also available on the internet"
ISTE
noun
Internation Society for Technology in Education. Is a community of global educators who believe in the power of technology to transform teaching and learning, accelerate innovation and solve tough problems in education.
Example: ISTE has more than a dozen quality standards for how students, teachers, administrators, coaches, and computer educators should approach technology in the classroom.
Multimedia
adjective
(of computer applications) Incorporating audio and video, especially interactively.
Example: The museum has a multimedia exhibit of photos, videos, and music.
PDF
noun
Portable Document Format. It is a file format for capturing and sending electronic documents in exactly the intended format.
Example: i'm sending the PDF file.
Search engine
noun
a website through which users can search internet content
Example: Google is a powerful search engine.
SLA
noun
Second Language Acquisition: is the process by which people learn a second language. Second-language acquisition is also the scientific discipline devoted to studying that process.
Example: There are many SLA theories, but the most known are the ones established by Krashen.
Spreadsheet
noun
an electronic document in which data is arranged in the rows and columns of a grid and can be manipulated and used in calculations.
Example: In modern spreadsheet applications, several spreadsheets, often known as worksheets or simply sheets, are gathered together to form a workbook.
Structural CALL
Focus and form and not meaning (grammar, phonology, etc)
Example: Starting in the ’50s and developing through the ’70s, we have what’s called Structural CALL by Warschauer.
TELL

Technology Enhanced Language Learning
Example: TELL includes a wider range of devices, not just computers.
Text editor
noun
a system or program that allows a user to edit text.
Example: Text editors are provided with operating systems and software development packages.
Wiki-technology
noun
Technology based on open-source software in the form of a Wiki engine.
Example: Wikis end up being created mainly by a collaborative effort of the site visitors.
Word processor
noun
is a device or computer program that provides for input, editing, formatting, and output of text, often with some additional features.
Example: The word processor, Writer, is a feature-packed analog of Microsoft Word.
www
noun
World Wide Web. Is a combination of all resources and users on the Internet that are using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).
