This glossary is related to my field of study which is business. I have been in this program for almost 2 years at Ahuntsic College. The program is related to terms such as marketing, human resources, entrepreneurship, banking, etc... This glossary will be useful to the students who are in the same program as me, but it will also be useful for those who want to learn more about business.
accountant
A person concerned with the maintenance and audit of business accounts and the preparation of consultant reports in tax and finance.
bankruptcy
A legal status involving a person or business that is unable to repay outstanding debts.
bill of lading
A detailed list of a shipment of goods in the form of a receipt given by the carrier to the person consigning the goods.
broker
A person who buys and sells goods or assets for others.
capital
A wealth in the form of money or other assets owned by a person or organization or available or contributed for a particular purpose such as starting a company or investing.
cash flow
The amount of money the company has on hand to pay of its operating expenses.
dividend
A portion of a company`s earnings which is paid to the shareholders or stockholders on a quarterly or annual basis.
exchange rate
An exchange rate is the value of one nation's currency versus the currency of another nation or economic zone.
insurance
A practice or arrangement by which a company or government agency provides a guarantee of compensation for specified loss, damage, illness, or death in return for payment of a premium.
interest
Money paid regularly at a particular rate for the use of money lent, or for delaying the repayment of a debt.
investment
The action or process of investing money for profit or material result.
joint venture
A way of entering a foreign market by joining with a foreign company to manufacture or market a product or service.
market research
The action or activity of gathering information about consumers' needs and preferences.
overdraft
A deficit in a bank account caused by drawing more money than the account holds.
product development
The process of creating a new product or improving an existing one.
share
One of the equal parts into which a company's capital is divided, entitling the holder to a proportion of the profits.
shareholder
One that owns or holds a share or shares of stock.
trade
The activity or process of buying, selling, exchanging goods or services.
venture
A risky undertaking.
warranty
A written guarantee, issued to the purchaser of an article by its manufacturer, promising to repair or replace it if necessary within a specified period of time.
