20 Education terms

This glossary contains some terms that can be used to understand better the field of education.

Assignment

noun

A task or piece of work assigned to someone as part of a job or course of study.

Example: My teacher gave us homework assignments for the next week.

Chalkboard

noun

A reusable writing surface on which text or drawings are made

Example: Tim come write on the chalkboard please.

Class

noun

A place where students meet regularly to study the same subject.

Example: Several students in the class are absent today.

Correct

verb

To show or tell someone that something is wrong and to make it right.

Example: Students said it was helpful if the teacher corrected their pronunciation.

Essay

noun

A short piece of writing on a particular subject.

Example: There is an english essay due for tomorrow

Lesson

noun

An amount of teaching given at one time; a period of learning or teaching.

Example: An advanced lesson in math.

Methodology

noun

A system of methods used in a particular area of study or activity.

Example: A methodology for investigating the concept of focal points.

Online class

noun

Online schools provide virtual classes that a student takes at home. Blended learning provides a mix of online and face-to-face instruction.

Example: This semester i will be taking online classes.

Oral presentation

noun

A short talk on a set topic given to a tutorial or seminar group.

Example: We need to prepare for the oral presentation about our research.

Pedagogy

noun

The method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject or theoretical concept.

Example: The relationship between applied linguistics and language pedagogy.

Reasoning

noun

The action of thinking about something in a logical, sensible way.

Example: He explained the reasoning behind his decision at a media conference.

Research

noun

The systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.

Example: We are fighting meningitis by raising money for medical research.

Scholarship

noun

A grant or payment made to support a student's education, awarded on the basis of academic or other achievement

Example: Tim held a Humboldt scholarship.

An institution for educating students.

Example: Today was the first day of school.

Sociology

noun

The study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society.

Example: Karl Popper Karl Popper born in 1902, was a philosopher educated in Vienna, and focused in the areas of science, sociology and politics.

Student

noun

a person who is studying at a school or college.

Example: There are four new students in the class this semester.

Syllabus

noun

A document that outlines everything that will be covered in a class.

Example: The syllabus was extremely prescriptive, and involved sitting several important examinations before admittance to the clinical phase.

Teacher

noun

a person who teaches, especially in a school.

Example: Continuing the comical motif is Bartle Massey, whose role as teacher within Hayslope also establishes an anticipation of change.

Textbook

noun

A book used as a standard work for the study of a particular subject.

Example: I forgot to bring my textbook for this morning.

Tutor

Act as a tutor to (a single student or a very small group).

Example: His children were privately tutored.
