airway
noun
The passage by which air reaches a person's lungs.

bag-valve mask
noun
An airway apparatus used to cover the patient's nose and mouth and begin ventilating the lungs mechanically by squeezing a reservoir of oxygen or air.

cardiac arrest
noun
A sudden, sometimes temporary, cessation of function of the heart.

defibrillation
noun
Defibrillation is a process in which an electronic device sends an electric shock to the heart to stop an extremely rapid, irregular heartbeat, and restore the normal heart rhythm.

electrocardiogram
noun
A record or display of a person's heartbeat produced by electrocardiography.

A small, local, involuntary, muscular contraction, due to spontaneous activation of single muscle cells or muscle fibers.

Large arteries and veins located in the mediastinum that enter and exit the heart.

heart rate
noun
The number of heartbeats per unit of time, usually per minute.

inflammation
noun
The body's response to cellular injury; also called the inflammatory response. In contrast to the immune response, inflammation develops swiftly, is nonspecific (attacks all unwanted substances in the same way) and is temporary, leading to healing.

Bands of connective tissue that connect bone to bone and hold joints together.

noun
Contractile tissue organized in large bundles that provides locomotion and movement for the body.

Tissue that transmits electrical impulses throughout the body.

noun
A broken bone in which the bone ends or the forces that caused it penetrate the surrounding skin.

Extreme period of anxiety resulting in great emotional distress.

Air cavity that conducts fluids from the eustachian tubes and tear ducts to and from the nasopharynx.

A state of physical or psychological arousal to stimulus; a hardship or strain; a physical or emotional response to a stimulus.

Bands of connective tissue that attach muscle to bone.

vaccine
noun
Solution containing a modified pathogen that does not actually cause disease but still stimulates the development of antibodies specific to it.

virus
noun
An organism much smaller than a bacterium, visible only under an electron microscope. Viruses invade and live inside the cells of the organisms they infect.

Eferring to alcohol or drug withdrawal in which the patient's body reacts severely when deprived of the abused substance.
