15 Diagnostic Imaging terms

Absorption
noun
The total transfer of energy from the xray photon to the atoms of matter through which the xray beam passes
Example: They were a lot of absorption

Cathode
noun
The NEGATIVE electrode in the xray tube; consists of a tungsten filament in a molybdenum cup; supplies the electrons necessary to generate xrays.
Example: Electrons produced from a heated cathode filament by thermionic emission are accelerated through a vacuum tube towards the viewing end (anode).

Collimator
noun
Example: Make sure the collimator is straight.

distorations
noun
a variations in the size or shape of the image in comparison to the object it represents
Example: Their is distorations on the image

dosimeter
noun
Device that monitors the quantity of x-ray exposure to health care workers
Example: Workers have to put their dosimeter before getting in.

Gamma
noun
Strongest form of radiation. Passes through most obstacles with the exception of lead. X-rays included in this category, although not as destructive.

Kilovoltage
noun
controls the wavelength of the x-ray beam
Example: Don't forget to reduce the kilovoltage

latent image

noun
A portion of the cathode in the xray tube; coiled wire made of tungsten, which produces electrons when heated

Ultrasound
noun
Use of high-frequency sound waves to produce an image of an organ or tissue
Example: A mass in Mary's appendix was detected and investigated using ultrasound and a CT scan.

upper gastrointestinal series

Radiographic examination of the esophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine during and after the introduction of barium as a contrast medium; also called upper GI series or barium swallow
