15 Pre-hospital Emergency Care program terms

This glossary is for my English class. It will help to learn new words in my study program. This can be very helpful for me and others who want to know more knowledge.

angina pectoris
noun
Deficient oxygen in the heart muscle and it causes pains.
Example: The heart monitoring shows an angina pectoris.

anisocoria
noun
It's when the pupils are not the same size.
Example: It's when the paramedic is looking at the patient pupils, and he sees that one pupil is big and the other one is small.

Beacons
noun
Name for the emergency cars lights
Example: When there's an emergency and the ambulance need to hurry on the road, the beacons are on.
fr: Gyrophare
Blood sugar
noun
It's the amount of sugar found in the blood.
Example: The paramedic need to take the blood sugar to know if it's too low or too high.
fr: Glycémie
cyanosis
noun
The skin has a little blue discoloration due to inadequate amount of oxygen in the blood.
Example: The patient has cyanosis on his hands and face.
fr: Cyanose
dyspnea
noun
Difficulty to breath.
Example: The patient has a lot of difficulty to breath and his oxygen level is low.
fr: Dyspnée
esophageal tracheal tube
noun
Tube that goes in the esophagus to facilitate the oxygen passage.
Example: The paramedic insert the esophageal tracheal tube while the patient is unconscious.

headache
noun
Pain in the head.
Example: The patient put his head between his two hands because of his headache.
fr: Céphalée
hemiplegia
noun
Paralysis of one side of the body.
Example: The patient has hemiplegia because his left side of the face is paralyzed.
fr: Hémiplégie
nasal cannula
noun
It goes in the nose of the patient and it brings to him oxygen.
Example: The paramedic give the patient a nasal cannula to help him upgrade his oxygen level.

restraint
noun
It's a measure we install on someone's wrists and ankles to keep him from moving.
Example: The paramedic installs restraint on the patient who is restless.

sphygmomanometer
noun
It's a device that calculates the patient blood pressure.
Example: The paramedic use the sphygmomanometer on the patient arm to calculate if the blood pressure is good or not.

Stretcher
noun
A metal frame with a mattress, used to carry sick people.
Example: The paramedic are using the stretcher to carry sick people.
fr: Civière

stroke
noun
A stroke is when the blood stops flowing any part of the brain.
Example: When there's half of the face who falls down, we can suspect a stroke on the patient.
fr: Accident vasculaire cérébral
vesicular murmur
noun
Healthy lungs are making vesicular murmurs sounds.
Example: When the paramedic needs to auscultate the patient's lungs, if the breaths are normal, he will hear vesicular murmurs.
