Allergy
Noun
A damaging immune response by the body to a substance, especially pollen, fur, a particular food, or dust, to which it has become hypersensitive.
Example: Peanut allergy is one of the more common food allergies, and allergic reactions range from discomfort and itching to death.

analgesic
noun
The term Analgesics encompasses a class of drugs that are designed to relieve pain without causing the loss of consciousness.
Example: Cryotherapy slows the inflammatory process as well as provides an analgesic effect.

Blood pressure
Noun
The force of circulating blood on the walls of the arteries. Blood pressure is taken using two measurements: systolic (measured when the heartbeats, when blood pressure is at its highest) and diastolic (measured between heartbeats, when blood pressure is at its lowest). Blood pressure is written with the systolic blood pressure first, followed by the diastolic blood pressure (for example 120/80).
Example: You need to take the blood pressure of the patient in room 237.

Blood test
Noun
A test done on a sample of blood to measure the amount of certain substances in the blood or to count different types of blood cells. Blood tests may be done to look for signs of disease or agents that cause disease, to check for antibodies or tumor markers, or to see how well treatments are working.
Example: We need to do a blood test on this patient.

Diabetes
noun
Diabetes is a disease in which your body either can't produce insulin or can't properly use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone produced by your pancreas. Insulin's role is to regulate the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood.
Example: As Mr has no history of diabetes, the hyperglycemia is probably a normal metabolic response to the severe demands currently placed upon his body.

Diet
Noun
A special course of food to which one restricts oneself, either to lose weight or for medical reasons.
Example: He was instructed to increase his fluids and start a light diet. 6 days post-op His OBS remained stable on the surgical ward.

Fever
noun
Fever also referred to as pyrexia, is defined as having a temperature above the normal range due to an increase in the body's temperature setpoint.
Example: The clinical symptoms associated with SARS-CoV infection is high fever, rigors, headache, malaise, myalgias, diarrhea and respiratory symptoms, such as dyspnea, dry cough, interstitial infiltrates and respiratory failure.

Heart rate/ pulse rate
noun
In medicine, the number of times the heart beats within a certain time period, usually a minute. The heart rate can be felt at the wrist, side of the neck, back of the knees, top of the foot, groin, and other places in the body where an artery is close to the skin. The resting heart rate is normally between 60 and 100 beats a minute in a healthy adult who is at rest. Measuring the heart rate gives important information about a person’s health. Also called pulse.
Example: My patient's heart rate is 76 beats per minute.

Hemorrhage
Noun
An escape of blood from a ruptured blood vessel, especially when profuse.
Example: Brian had a hemorrhage of the brain.

Hospital
Noun
An institution providing medical and surgical treatment and nursing care for sick or injured people.
Example: Foot ulceration, resulting from nerve damage (neuropathy) and lack of blood supply (ischaemia) is the commonest reason for diabetics in the UK to be admitted to hospital, and people with diabetes are 15 times more likely to need amputation, as a result of ulcers becoming infected and gangrenous than people without the condition.

Hyperglycemia
Noun
An excess of glucose in the bloodstream, often associated with diabetes mellitus.
Example: Common complications associated with diabetic patients on feeds are hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia due to the feed being incompatible.

Hypoglycemia
Noun
Hypoglycemia is a condition in which your blood sugar (glucose) level is lower than normal. Glucose is your body's main energy source.
Example: My patient has hypoglycemia this morning.

Infection
Noun
The invasion and multiplication of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites that are not normally present within the body.
Example: Thomas has an infection in his foot.

Insulin
Noun
A hormone produced in the pancreas by the islets of Langerhans, which regulates the amount of glucose in the blood. The lack of insulin causes a form of diabetes.
Example: Type two diabetes is generally associated with older, overweight individuals and develops when the body cannot use insulin effectively.

Needle
Noun
The pointed hollow end of a hypodermic syringe.
Example: It involves a thin needle, guided by ultrasound, being inserted through the mother's abdomen into the uterus.

Operation
Noun
A procedure performed on a living body usually with instruments especially for the repair of damage or defect or the restoration of health.
Example: There was also removal of a corpus luteum cyst on the right ovary, which was then repaired. It bled quite heavily during the operation and required 2 units of blood to be transfused because Hb was only 8.8g dL.

Pills
Noun
A small round mass of solid medicine to be swallowed whole.
Example: In previous studies, high oestrogen pills have been linked to an increased risk of endometrial and possibly breast cancer.

Respiratory rate
noun
The number of breaths per minute or, more formally, the number of movements indicative of inspiration and expiration per unit time. In practice, the respiratory rate is usually determined by counting the number of times the chest rises or falls per minute. The aim of measuring respiratory rate is to determine whether the respirations are normal, abnormally fast (tachypnea), abnormally slow (bradypnea), or nonexistent (apnea).
Example: My patient's respiratory rate is 16 breaths per minute.

Stethoscope
noun
A medical instrument used in listening to sounds produced within the body, chiefly in the heart or lungs.
Example: We can hear the heart with the stethoscope.

Vital signs
Noun
Clinical measurements, specifically pulse rate, temperature, respiration rate, and blood pressure, that indicate the state of a patient's essential body functions.
Example: Vital signs should be taken from room 234.

Wheelchair
Noun
A chair fitted with wheels for use as a means of transport by a person who is unable to walk as a result of illness, injury, or disability.
Example: The patient was in a wheelchair due to pain in his foot.
