altruism
noun
the belief in or practice of disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others.
Example: The theory starts with one simple mechanism - the competition between memes to get into human brains and be passed on again - and from this it gives rise to explanation for such diverse phenomena as the evolution of the enormous human brain, the origins of language, human altruism, sex, religion, and even the evolution of the internet (Blackmore, 1999).

amygdala
noun
a roughly almond-shaped mass of gray matter inside each cerebral hemisphere, involved with the experiencing of emotions
Example: The hypothalamus also receives important input from the amygdala, which is involved in emotional processes.

behaviourism
noun
the theory that human and animal behavior can be explained in terms of conditioning, without appeal to thoughts or feelings, and that psychological disorders are best treated by altering behavior patterns.
Example: Human beings have a sense of feeling and of free will; behaviourism disregards this and sees the personality as a set of outward reactions rather than a distinct entity.

Debriefing is a report of a mission or project or the information so obtained.
Example: The whole experiment could be divided into three stages: initial briefing session, experiment, and debriefing.

heuristic
adjective
enabling someone to discover or learn something for themselves.
Example: An associative heuristic picks out T&F as being more likely while a chain of reasoning reveals T as more probable (Sloman, 1996).

hypothesis
noun
a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
Example: Blackmore's dislike of religion causes a problem for memetic theory as she uses an objective scientific theory to try to prove an un-testable subjective hypothesis, to counter another view point.

a surgical operation involving incision into the prefrontal lobe of the brain, formerly used to treat mental illness.
Example: The types of treatment include insulin shock therapy, electronic convulsive therapy and pre-frontal lobotomy, which requires certain neural connections in the brain being severed

noun
is a phenomenon whereby exposure to one stimulus influences a response to a subsequent stimulus, without conscious guidance or intention.
Example: They obtained evidence that between priming an unrelated word and priming an emotion term within a certain emotion group, the latter produced faster reaction times in a lexical decision task.
