20 Words referring to nursing care terms

This glossary is based on words used in the nursing profession. I chose these terms because they are frequently used, but also because it will be useful if I need to have an interaction using these terms with a patient. I am studying to be a nurse.

Abscess
Noun
Lump of pus in a body cavity.
Example: PMH Previous medical history includes the following: Diphtheria during childhood Malaria along with pneumonia and a lung abscess () Right potts fracture () Gout () which has been mainly asymptomatic for 30-35years, although occasional flare-ups Myocardial infarctions (, and ) Hypertension (since ) Bronchiectasis for which he receives daily postural drainage by his wife in order to prevent symptoms Hard of hearing No history of CVA, diabetes, asthma or rheumatic fever.

Blood clot
Noun
A gelatinous mass of fibrin and blood cells formed by the coagulation of blood.
Example: Histology: No trophoblastic cells present, only a blood clot. bHCG was re-measured to confirm there was no longer a viable pregnancy and results came back as less than 1.

Crutch
Noun
A long stick with a crosspiece at the top, used as a support under the armpit by a person with an injury or disability.
Example: Gait had an antalgic gait but was able to partially weight bear on his right ankle with the use of a crutch in the left hand.

Cyanosis
Noun
A bluish discoloration of the skin resulting from poor circulation or inadequate oxygenation of the blood.
Example: Other signs associated with hypoxia may also occur in life-threatening attack such as cyanosis, exhaustion and confusion.

Drowsiness
Noun
A feeling of being sleepy and lethargic; sleepiness.
Example: Based on the acute symptoms Mrs presented with, the differential diagnoses of collapse, verbally unresponsive in a COPD patient are: Collapse secondary to CO2 retention: given Mrs 's history of COPD, her dyspnoea, drowsiness, tachycardia and confusion fit with this diagnosis.

Edema
Noun
A condition characterized by an excess of watery fluid collecting in the cavities or tissues of the body.
Example: This will expedite the removal of hemoarthrosis, reduce spasms, edema and pain as well as reduce nerve root irritation when present.12 Phase of Healing -- Phases II and III The second stage of healing, the repair phase, may last from 48 hours up to 6 weeks.

Esophagus
Noun
The part of the alimentary canal that connects the throat to the stomach.
Example: During my last annual visit to the doctor, he told me that I probably had a tumor in my esophagus.

Fever
Noun
Abnormal rise in body temperature.
Example: No abdominal distension or fever.

Ileum
Noun
The ileum corresponds to the third and last part of the small intestine, directly following the jejunum, and which extends through the first part of the colon, the cecum.
Example: As a result sticky, inspissated meconium blocks the lower ileum of the foetus.

Necrosis
Noun
The death of most or all of the cells in an organ or tissue due to disease, injury, or failure of the blood supply.
Example: Complete with an acutely threatened limb (At risk group) Incomplete with a viable limb In category one, amputation is inevitable and should be carried out promptly as delay may result in death from the systemic sequelae of muscle necrosis which include hyperkalaemia, acidosis, acute renal failure and sepsis.

Petechiae
Noun
Small spot appearing on the skin as a result of skin hemorrhage.
Example: Important clinical signs of IE include the following: Finger clubbing New cardiac murmurs Splinter haemorrhages Janeway lesions (Flat, non-tender, blanchable red spots found on palms and soles - shown below) Osler's nodes (Tender, erythematous, pea-sized nodules seen in the pulp of the fingers - shown below) petechiae on skin, palate and conjunctiva Splenomegaly Roth spots upon fundoscopy The admission notes from A+E will also be obtained in order to provide an insight into Mr 's condition upon arrival.

Pleura
Noun
Each of the two membranes that surround the lungs (pleural).
Example: Chylothroax, due to a leaking thoracic duct, this is unlikely as this occurs on the left hand side of the pleura and is caused by trauma or surgery.

Popliteal
Adjective
From the posterior part of the knee.
Example: Abdominal aorta, iliac, femoral, popliteal arteries) Rheumatic valvular disease Artheromatous plaques Aneurysms Paradoxical emboli (if PFO is present) Iatrogenic (following interventional radiological procedures) In the case of Mr there were several important features elicited from the history which may have predisposed him to vascular disease.

Rhinoplasty
Noun
Surgical operation which aims to modify the structure of the external nose. It can be motivated by functional problems or by an aesthetic concern.
Example: I had to have rhinoplasty because my nose was fractured several years ago and it is not as symmetrical as I would like despite the surgeries I had before.

Sphygmomanometer
Noun
Device used to measure blood pressure.
Example: We regularly use the sphygmomanometer in hospitals to measure the vital signs of our patients.

Sprain
Noun
It is the stretching or tearing of a ligament or muscle fibers.
Example: On he went to the GP, who was initially treating him for a muscular sprain, as no other clinical evidence of lung pathology was evident.

Sterile gauze
Noun
In the form of small squares with four folds used to clean closed wounds, or to strengthen a bandage. They can be applied directly to the wound to protect the wound from contamination.
Example: After taking my blood sugar, I wiped the drop of blood that came out of my finger with sterile gauze .

Stitches
Noun
A loop of thread or yarn resulting from a single pass or movement of the needle in sewing, knitting, or crocheting.
Example: Today the nurse was allowed to remove my head stitches.

Swab
Noun
An absorbent pad or piece of material used in surgery and medicine for cleaning wounds, applying medication, or taking specimens.
Example: A Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) screen via nasopharyngeal swab was negative.

Tourniquet
Noun
A device for stopping the flow of blood through a vein or artery, typically by compressing a limb with a cord or tight bandage
Example: The tourniquet was released after 70 min and homeostasis was achieved.
