This glossary is a Nursing based glossary/vocabulary. I chose these words because they are specific with my future profession. That is what i'm studying for now and I want to go to University after my Cegep.
Acuity
Noun
Clearness; or a disorder's level of severity; minimum level or need for healthcare services that must be met for a client to be admitted to an acute care facility.
Example: The sensory evaluation is based on an interaction of psychological, physiological, environmental and economic factors, such as health state, personal prejudices, preferences, sensory acuity, and motives of profit or loss.

Aphasia
Noun
An abnormal neurologic condition in which a person is unable to express oneself through speech or writing.
Example: An underdevelopment of the left hemisphere of the brain may restrict the ability of language as evidenced in the study of aphasia, conducted by Kempler in 1993.

Assertiveness
Noun
Confidence without aggression or passivity, an important skill for a nurse to possess in interpersonal communication.
Example: To develop social and assertiveness skills .

Circumduction
Noun
Circular movement of a limb or the eye.
Example: Normal hip range of motion includes abduction, adduction, circumduction, extension, and flexion.

Adjective
The opposite side.
Example: The stent was used to exclude thrombus in the contralateral brachiocephalic.

Crackle
Noun
On auscultation, an abnormal discontinuous non-musical respiratory sound heard on inspiration; formerly called rale.
Example: There was crackle on the lung.

Emaciation
Noun
A wasting away of the flesh, causing extreme leanness, starvation.
Example: The toxic actions produced in continued fevers, in certain chronic diseases, and by intestinal parasites largely aid in producing degeneration, emaciation and atrophy.

Fragile; easily broken
Example: The friable boxes arrived intact.

Gurney
Noun
Our-wheeled cart; also called gurney, wheeled stretcher. A litter scale is used to weigh clients who cannot stand.
Example: However, as the elevator had a gurney in it, there was not enough room to clear the way.

Halitosis
Noun
Bad breath.
Example: If the problem of halitosis persists, a visit to the doctor is necessary to determine the cause.

Noun
Scar or scar tissue
Example: Keloid formation is invariably out of proportion to the degree of tissue damage.

Noun
An abnormal increase in the thoracic curvature of the spine, giving a hunchback appearance, commonly as a result of osteoporosis.
Example: Children with nail-patella syndrome should be periodically screened for scoliosis and lordosis.

Formation or discharge of pus.

Venipuncture

Puncture of a vein, usually with a needle. May be used to obtain a blood specimen or to start an intravenous infusion (IV).
Example: Venipuncture is one of the most common methods in the clinical treatment.
