15 Accounting terms

Hi everyone, my name is Olivier and I'm an accounting student at Cégep de Thetford. This is a glossary about accounting, it can help people to use common words about this field of study.

allocate
verb
distribute (resources or duties) for a particular purpose
Example: They tend to allocate a large amount of their family budget to travel expenditures.

bill
noun
a statement of money owed for goods or services supplied
Example: As drinks bill are often transferred to the restaurant, this happens on a regular basis.

capital
noun
term for financial assets, such as funds held in deposit accounts and/or funds obtained from special financing sources
Example: He mentions that company's decrease in Net cash from operating activities is the result of "increased capital expenditure" .

deficit
noun
In financial terms, a deficit occurs when expenses exceed revenues, imports exceed exports, or liabilities exceed assets.
Example: Of particular interest, is the Guidotti Rule, postulates that the ratio of short term debt augmented with a projected current account deficit (or another measure of expected borrowing) could serve useful an indicator of how long a country can sustain external imbalance without resorting to foreign borrowing.

the value of the shares issued by a company.
Example: Once we know the Beta of the New York Stock Exchange equals to 100000, for instance, we will be able to predict the required return on equity. 3 The Usefulness & Criticisms of the CAPM The expected return calculated applying CAPM is an important tool in project appraisal.

Example: Moreover, the company established the Ryotwari system to concentrate land holdings among a few owners, thus making it easy for the tax officials to collect the revenue, as they dealt only with the landlord and did not have to interact with the far-flung rural areas.

money (or some equivalent value) that an individual or business receives, usually in exchange for providing a good or service or through investing capital
Example: It does not just create jobs for the local people, but also may increase the local residents' income and improve life style.

contract by which one party conveys land, property, services, etc. to another for a specified time, usually in return for a periodic payment
Example: Certificate A - should be completed if you are the freehold owner of the property, or have 7 years or more unexpired on your lease.

legal agreement by which a bank or other creditor lends money at interest in exchange for taking title of the debtor's property, with the condition that the conveyance of title becomes void upon the payment of the debt.
Example: The Emergency Farm mortgage Act enabled the refinancing of the farm mortgages and provided money for the farmers to redeem their previously abandoned farms.

adj. noun
an entity's income minus cost of goods sold, expenses, depreciation and amortization, interest, and taxes for an accounting period.
Example: It is often justified on the grounds that it separates items of transitory nature from net income and so is reported as part of equity rather than in an income statement.

the degree to which a business or activity yields profit or financial gain.
Example: The reason the cash budget is necessary is "to plan the impact of these expenditures on cash flow and profitability".

also known as salvage value, is the estimated value of a fixed asset at the end of its lease term or useful life.
Example: This shows the presence of one outlier and that too with a standardised residual value of just -4.1.
