This bike was built back in 2015 by the company Santos and the University of South Australia. The bike, registered in the Guinness World Records was able to travel a minimum of 100 meters, without riders touching the ground.
With the help of a pace car that removes wind disturbances, the top speed achieved when riding the bike on flat terrain was 268 km/h. This was achieved back in 1995 by Fred Rompelberg.
It is estimated that there are about 1 billion bicycles in the world. China is said to have 450 million bicycles. Market research has yet to determine how many bikes are actually ridden rather than just sit and not be used!
The world's most famous bicycle race, the Tour de France, was first held in 1903. The original plan was to have a five-stage race starting in Paris, stopping in Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Nantes and returning to Paris. Cyclists back then drank beer, wine and even champagne during the race.
With over 1 billion bicycles worldwide, the demand for bicycles is inherently constant. To keep up, manufacturers produce about 364,000 bicycles every day. By comparison, 15,000 bikes per hour and 253 bikes per minute, or 4 bikes per second. Someone on planet Earth purchases a bike every two seconds.
