A General Overview About Anxiety

A general overview about anxiety that is faced and battled within our day to day lives as college students is immaculate. Every so often anxiety is portrayed as a student being lazy, tired, sleepy, and or labeled as being irresponsible. When such labels are given to students that face anxiety it creates an additional element to this mental illness. Anxiety can eventually be so overwhelming due to the fact that the more you excel in college or if you unintentionally let all the assignments compile and slack, more anxiety and stress accumulates which can later turn into depression and even worse dropout rates going up. Especially to those students that have intense and severe responsibilities. Erratically juggling school, work, maturing, and having a personal life is so much of a hassle that if you let anxiety get in the way it creates an additional amount of work overload that tends to compile and can lead to severe depression, lack of motivation and worst-case scenario dropping out.

1. Reaching Hand of Success

The sensation that anxiety gives when trying to advance in school work can often feel like we are being so suffocated in a pile of workbooks, textbooks, and homework and fulfilling all the requirements for certain classes when the assignments are finally over it can feel like a breakthrough and release all the workload at least until the next day, but other times it can feel like you are reaching your hand up for help to someone to pick you back up and help motivate, but I also saw it as in I am alive statement as in I am a survivor of finishing all my work and feeling accomplished once you have achieved in finishing all your homework.

2. Human Backpack

Another common symptom of anxiety within a college student can also portray itself as a typical 20 year old carrying all their to-do's, basically “Human Backpack” walking around . As a college student having final exams, jobs, social life, and extracurriculars self-time self-love and debts along with student loans that are weighing almost every college student down. This image represents this version of anxiety. The image portrays a stressed college student. It is evident that he is carrying all these “books” on his back and it’s making him stressed and although it is very stressful when you could see the stress that it is in his eyes I like to see this as perseverance to keep pushing through because I made a quick observation on his arm figure and how it is firmly built and I specifically chose this image and photograph to show that once all these things have been accomplished and after college I will finally have the strength and be molded into the man that I am supposed to be due to the anxiety that I had during college which is preparing me for real life.

3. Statistical reasoning in anxiety and mental students within college

Anxiety has no age, race, or gender that it attacks. 80% of students have stress on a day-to-day basis and that is not even including their stress educational wise and 75% of US adults I’ve had at least the first episode of anxiety by the age of 22 and 40% of students do not seek medication or treatments for their mental health and it gets to the point where it gets very severe and there is no help available due to the fact that it has grown so much that it has provided underlying diseases or causes due to stress and anxiety. This image demonstrates all these statistics that I am explaining. I believe I do fall into this percentage.

4. The underlying truth of deception within the college students face

When developing into a career or trying to get further ahead in life I believe trying to convey a typical “I am well put together” persona. I have seen the need for college students to do that especially here in America and they do not take the time to figure out and process their emotions which later ends up turning to anxiety because they see how far ahead, they have gone in career or school wise and still do not know what they are doing with their lives. This image presented above portrays me when I was dealing with a lot of anxiety. When I was struggling with anxiety I felt like the lower face where I was looking down constantly and I was always feeling down and having to deal with my anxiety all by myself made it worse. It gave me a sense that I was lonely all the time. The middle face is made a face that portrayed the world that I looked fine and well compacted. The face at the top that is looking up was me confused because I felt like my anxiety was not letting me be the best version of myself so I felt as if I kept looking up because I would see and envision myself if I did not have anxiety and all the great accomplishments I would receive and how I felt like I was looking up to my future self and letting myself down.

5. The thought of school

Many students lay in bed, not being able to go to sleep and the alarm clock ringing next to it due to the fact that the student stayed awake almost all night thinking about scholarships, their scores, grade point average, student loans, peer pressure, and way more thoughts and towards the end it states maybe I’ll just stay in bed for the rest of my life which I feel like a lot of students procrastinate on their work due to the fact that it gets so overwhelming and they rather just give up or take a nap due to so much stress that they are perceiving in their body.

6. Problems and affects

To add on a similar way, within this there are students having difficulty going through their day thinking about scholarships, their test scores, GPA, their student loans, peer pressure and way more thoughts that not only revolve school. Anxiety also comes from personal problems such as having problems at home, work or with a boyfriend/girlfriend. That being said, anxiety is also a factor of feeling nervous or having difficulty controlling emotions, which leads to more and more problems.

7. The multitasking of thinking

Furthermore, within my major math is a big factor and I am really good with numbers so this spoke out to me because in the middle of all my problems at least numbers won’t be my issue. Therefore, I try to put my numbers according to the problems that I have in life and it simplifies all the bad things but numbers can’t solve everything and sometimes in the math problem you just need one solution or you know that 2+2 is four in life that doesn’t matter you could be adding all the numbers that you want and you could be thrown with negatives and positives, sometimes you won’t end up with the results that you want to have and no matter how much you try to add or subtract in your life equation. I believe that a lot of college students relate to this problem because multitasking most of the time creates anxiety which is something that college students suffer from.

Conclusion

In conclusion, anxiety within college students can really bring down the efficiency of studying methods that work for normal functioning students and this takes a toll when presenting grades and outcomes within a plethora of students. Since the level of concentration is not correlating with the train of thought that the student has anxiety can stop a lot of students from doing their academic best. Acknowledging that there are so many students struggling with this type of phenomena is absolutely insane. This issue is very important to society because the education system must have more awareness of symptoms and student needs. The more dropout rate rises each and every single year we will have less professionals and less people with a lot of knowledge due to the fact that a lot of people are dropping out due to a high factor which anxiety, when in reality if we adhere to the students’ needs and acknowledge what is happening this can be fix. Some students aren’t even willing to try going to college because they put the excuse saying “school is not for everyone” when in reality school should be very simple and enjoyable, but in college there are a plethora of things that surround one’s life not just education just how it is described in all the pictures above. Then we ask, if anxiety is such a big issue for everyone but especially for college students, why hasn't a solution on how to reduce the rates of anxiety levels towards college students decreased? Instead, it has increased during the past years.
